Merry Christmas, Sheepdogs,

***** Mindset *****

Last week Thursday, 12/3/2015, I got rammed from behind
as I sat stuck in traffic.  I had my safety belts on, so only
got banged by the head rest against my head.  I didn't see
the other car coming.  I should have.  I could have pulled
onto the sidewalk to avoid getting hit.  I could have hit
my horn.  I could have braced for impact.  Being taken by
surprise is nasty.

When driving --
Pregnant women should place the lap belt as low
as possible under the abdomen and the shoulder harness
to the side of the tummy bulge and between the breasts.
The safety belt will not harm an unborn baby; however,
an unborn baby may be harmed if the mother becomes
injured in a collision because she failed to wear a
safety belt.
Never place children in safety seats in the front
seat of a vehicle equipped with an air bag, as airbags
pop open at speeds of 200 mph and the impact can cause
fatalities in younger passengers. If the safety seat
is placed correctly (facing backwards), the child's
neck will be be broken if the airbag goes off. If the
safety seat is placed incorrectly (facing forward) and
the child is hit by an inflating airbag, the damage
is indescribable!
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration, over 260 deaths are believed to have
been caused by airbags inflating during minor crashes;
more than 58% of those deaths involved small children
who were unbelted or improperly restrained in child
safety seats near airbags.
If two vehicles meet on a one-lane mountain road,
the downhill-facing vehicle should back up until the
uphill-facing vehicle can safely pass. Reversing
uphill is easier to control than reversing downhill.

Greetings Sheepdogs,

***** Mindset *****

I met a group of friends for dinner at a restaurant.
When my friends entered and sat, we looked at each other
considering what stage of life the others were in and what
family ties they had.  I spoke up first.
"I have no wife and kids to think about.  (My kids are
grown with families of their own.)  So, I am the alpha
sheepdog.  If we are attacked.  I will immediately
counter attack.  Your job is to ensure the escape of those
in our party.  Escape routes are front doors, back door
through the kitchen, and exit down the hallway toward the
restrooms (Which I knew of because I had used the restrooms
after being seated by the host.)."  (I always arrive early
so as not to get ambushed.  I always recon before sitting
down and getting comfortable.  I'm always in the tactical
seat, because I get there early.)
The others at the table agreed.
A lady at the next table, over hearing us, asked,
"What are you people?"
"We're the church planning committee." I responded.

Every Monday night from 6:00 to 8:00 PM,
I'm coaching the Mount Juliet Christian Academy
Rifle Club.  We practice at a private indoor
range, the Nashville Armory.  On the other lanes
I see people shooting pistols with incorrect
grips.  Some of these grips are dangerous,
resulting in cut thumbs.  Whenever I see such
things, I tell a range officer.  But, that's not
always effective or in time.  So, I approach the
person and suggest a better way to grip the pistol,
as friendly advice.  Safety is your responsibility.

***** Training *****

     This past weekend, 12/4/15 to 12/6/15, I took a
"Rapid Assault Tactics" 16.5 hour workshop in the ASSERT
program at the KSA Martial Academy in Nashville, TN.
It was originally developed by Paul Vunak.
I enthusiastically recommend the course.  (It is physically
strenuous.)  Some things I learned:
You have to have the mind set in order to access your
skill set.
Bite to your canines or incisors.  We do not intend
to masticate and swallow, only to tear out flesh, hopefully
severing arteries.
Why are you scared of a growling dog?  The dog only
has teeth.  You have teeth, two arms, two legs, and
training.  You can defeat the dog.  The dog's brain is
behind its eyes.  You can easily gouge through the eye into
the brain.  You can easily bite through the front of its
neck to severe its carotid arteries.
A couple years ago, the neighbor's dogs were chasing
my girlfriend's son around.  When I went out to confront
the neighbor, his dogs started growling at me.  I made a
hard decision at that point to immediately kill the dogs.
I was not going back into the house to get my gun.  I was
going to kills the dogs right now with my hands and teeth.
Before I charged, the dogs ran away.  That is reality.
That is mind set.  That is why I rarely have a girlfriend.

Greetings Sheepdogs,

***** Mindset *****

Last night, 11/17/15, Federal Bureau of
Investigation, Assistant Special Agent in
Charge (of the Nashville, TN area),
Jeffery E. Peterson spoke to the Tennessee
Firearms Association.  I paraphrase.

He told us that, in the event of an active shooter
incident, the best course of action for the individual's
survival is to run.  Get out of the building.  Get out
of the area.  Because those who hide get killed.
Don't hide, run!

If you decide to fight the bad guy, consider
your competence and chaos:
Competence --
He gave the example of persons driving their cars in
a snow storm on icy roads.  The average drive (who
learned to drive from his parents) driving a rear-wheel
drive economy car might end up off the road in a ditch.
Whereas, the highly trained driver (military, police,
or private driving school) driving an all-wheel drive
sedan, might have no problem getting where she's going.
Do you know that you can operate in a high stress
situation while injured, distinguish between good guys
and bad gals with insufficient information, move quickly
while injured, apply accurate fire to moving targets at
varying distances while moving yourself, and while
getting shot at?  Do you know that your equipment will
function under adverse conditions (or does your pistol
malfunction every so often on the range)?  If not,
you might consider running away.  Because getting
yourself killed isn't going to help anyone.  While on
the other hand, being a good witness, giving the police
accurate timely information on which they can operate
would be great for everyone.
Chaos --
Consider that when the law enforcement officers
arrive on the scene the situation will be chaotic.
The officers will have insufficient information and
possibly false information (because when people
panic, they misinterpret observations, so the witness
reports are often wrong).  This means there is a
real danger that you will be shot by responding officers
because you are holding a pistol.  The LEOs are not
going to have time to interview you before deciding
whether or not to shoot you.
Once, you have incapacitated the bad guy and
determined that there are no other bad guys, you need
to separate yourself from your pistol and and show
that your hands are empty to avoid getting shot by
responding officers.

Since the Columbine incident, law enforcement
officers in our country are taught ALERRT
(Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training).
The protocol for an active shooter incident used to be
to secure the perimeter and call for tactical support.
But, too many people died at Columbine.  So, ALERRT
training says, whoever is there should immediately
counter attack.  [Sounds like what we learned in the
Marine Corps, immediately counter attack any attack.]
This is of course, much more dangerous for the
responding officer.  So, don't put yourself in a
position to get shot.  Don't force the officer to
shoot you.

Always carry a spare magazine, because you will
need it to clear malfunctions.
If you're part of a security team for your church,
make sure you know who else is armed in the
congregation.

will stop and walk away.  If he continues toward you,
he has demonstrated malice that you can articulate to
the responding officer.

Greetings Sheepdogs,

***** Mindset *****

"Jennifer, a Deputy in Orlando, FL got shot
10 times.  She shot and killed the two men
who were shooting her (only fair).  She was
back on the job a year later."
-- Col. Dave Grossman
The Colonel was making the point that
getting shot need not stop you from doing.
It is fairly common not to know that you got
shot.  That is why we teach our students to
examine themselves and others for injuries
after an incident.  The adrenaline (epinephrine)
in your blood stream and other things may
prevent your awareness of the pain and burning
sensation.

"I was talking to a Navy Seal.  I said, you're
not very big.  The Sailor said, not many of us
are, we're just trained."
-- Jimmy Meeks
The pastor was making the point that
training is essential.  What differentiates
sheepdogs from sheep is training.  Many sheep
are willing to fight to protect others, (as
any parent would protect their child) but they
are not competent to do so.  So, they lack the
confidence, so they don't fight.  Or, they do
and get themselves killed.  Which doesn't help
anyone.

The above is from a webinar with
Lt. Col. Dave Grossman,
Police Officer and Minister Jimmy Meeks, and
Church Security Expert Carl Chinn at
http://livestream.com/accounts/14289416/events/4481130

What I leaned from the webinar --
At church, lock all back doors.  Force
everyone to come through the front doors.  This
allows the sheepdogs to check out everyone entering
the building and it ensures everyone entering
knows that the sheepdogs are checking them out.
This prevents criminals from sneaking in without
being seen to commit crimes and escape without
being seen.
While everyone else is closing their eyes and
bowing their heads to pray, the sheepdogs must
pray with their eyes open and looking around.
Gideon chose his soldiers by how they drank water
at the lake.  Those who brought the water up to
their mouth while looking around to the horizon,
Gideon chose.  Those who put their face down to
the water and so could not see the horizon, Gideon
sent home.
Minister Meeks reported that two pastors had
recently been shot while praying.  We must adapt
to reality and prevent this from happening.
I have been trained since birth to close my
eyes and bow my head when praying.  I will have
difficulty breaking this habit.  All of life is
intentionally breaking habits and intentionally
forming new habits.

***** Training *****

     Incompetent people get themselves killed
when they try to defend others.  Which doesn't
help anyone.  Yes, training takes time and
commitment.  Marine Corps Recruit Training takes
three months (full time, including weekends).
Training is not cheap.  Training requires
sacrifice.  Anything worthwhile in life requires
sacrifice.
Decide to get training.  Get training.
And then, practice.  Combat skills are perishable
skills.  You must practice.

Greetings Sheepdogs,

***** Mindset *****

Combat in the Armed Forces is much easier than
combat in the civilian world.
In the military, the rules of engagement are well
defined. (They may not be to your liking, but they are
well defined.)  There is always a commanding officer
or some other authority giving the order to use deadly
force and taking responsibility for the action.  As
long as you are obeying legal orders, your ass is
covered.  (It's actually very difficult to prove that
you were obeying illegal orders and knew that they
were illegal at the time.)  The reality is that no one
is going to bother you about it.  You usually have
lots of time to prepare and plan the action.  You
usually have lots of your buddies around you for
moral support, and everyone is cuing off each other.
And with extremely rare exception, everyone is going
to swear the killings were righteous.  You may even
get a medal.
In the civilian self-defense world, the situation
is usually ill defined, even if the rules of engagement
are well defined.  And often, the rules of engagement
are ill defined.  Depending on the location (school,
home, parking lot, etc.), jurisdiction (state laws,
municipal laws, etc.), and situation (events that
occurred before you started paying attention to the
situation), who knows which laws the police and
prosecutor will choose to apply.  No one is commanding
you.  No one is helping you.  You have to make the
decision to use lethal force by yourself with
insufficient information and insufficient time.  You
assume the criminal and civil liability.  You don't
get to leave the scene (and the country) and go home.
You have to deal with it for the rest of your life.
The witnesses may be your enemies.  The press may be
your enemy.

***** Training *****

Instructor:  If you are unwilling to train in the rain,
what makes you think you will be willing to get wet
when the lives of your children depend on it?
Student:  But, that's an entirely different situation.
Instructor:  Yes, it is.  But, you will do what you have
trained to do.  By choosing not to train in the rain,
you have trained yourself to not train in the rain.
Several years ago, when the California Highway
Patrol still used revolvers, some officers got into a
gun fight with some bad guys.  The dead officers were
found with their spent casings in their pockets.
[This incident was told to us by a former CHP who
taught at Front Sight.]  In a high stress situation,
you will revert to your training.
In combat, humans don't rise to the occasion.
That only happens in novels.  In non-fiction, humans
regress to the level of training that they have
mastered.  So, you have to train in the rain.

In the real world, fixed blade knives are just too
long to carry concealed.  The folding blade knife is the
practical solution.  Here in Tennessee, where all knives
are legal, one might think to use a switchblade
(automatic knife), or spring assisted knife.  That would
be wrong.  Simple is more reliable.  One should minimize
the number of parts, especially moving parts, such as
springs.  Springs should be elastic.  Stainless steal is
not elastic.  So, good springs are not stainless steal.
Which means they will rust if you don't clean them
regularly.  Rusty springs will break.

Tom Clark writes with regards to life time
Concealed Weapons Permits -- Some jurisdictions
(South Carolina for sure) allow such a permit to
satisfy the FBI Background check when purchasing a
gun. So that rather than having the FFL contact the
FBI to run a “background” check, the permit
information is recorded on the ATF Form 1443.
BUT – the identification used for this must have
been issued within the past 5 years.  So, a Lifetime
permit would not offer this usefulness after five
years.  The applicable Federal Statute is found
at:  27 CFR § 478.102(d).

While this is not the time for widespread panic,
it is a time to prepare.  I would encourage my fellow

Your Tactical Training Scenario -
An Unnecessary Shooting
http://www.activeresponsetraining.net/your-tactical-training-scenario-an-unnecessary-shooting
You hear gunshots.  Gather up your loved ones
and run away.
You feel compelled to engage?  So, you run
toward the sound of gunfire.  Do you understand
what's going on?  Do you know who the good guys are?
Who the bad guys are?  Where the good guys are?
Where the bad guys are?  No, you don't.  So, leave!

There are a lot of "instructors" in our industry
who are teaching things that are wrong.  Please be
careful.  For instance,
http://www.gundigest.com/gun-videos/video-disengaging-thumb-safety-draw
Mr. Pincus teaches to disengage the thumb safety
while pushing the pistol toward the target.  This is
wrong.  The thumb safety should be disengaged at the
close contact position, because you may have to shoot
from that position.  If your assailant is close enough
to grab your pistol, you're not going to extend.
Mr. Pincus teaches to engage the safety when you
pull back into the close contact position.  This is
wrong.  The pistol is still in use.  The safety should
only be engaged before holstering.
Clicking the safety on and off while operating wastes
time and complicates the manual of arms.

I just dropped some pistachio shells (hard)
into my trash can.  They hit an empty plastic
juice bottle (hard) and bounced out of the trash
can.  Hard things will bounce off of hard things.
That's why we teach hard against soft when shooting
with support.  If you place your hard pistol
against a hard wall, the shock wave from the
detonation of the cartridge will cause the pistol
to bounce off the wall and throw your shot off
target.  Your soft hand or other body part should
be between your pistol and any hard surface.

If you're going to the Highland Games and
wearing your kilt this would be appropriate in
the United States.  Going to the United Kingdom
is always inappropriate.  It's a gun free zone.

Last night I took a dental pick and dug out all
the white paint in the front and rear sights of my
SA XD pistol.  Then, I blackened the bear metal with
an indelible black ink marker.  A pistol should not
have two sighting systems (the white dots, the
silhouette), because they will have different points
of impact, because they are different sighting
systems.  The white dots won't be visible in the
dark.  The silhouette of your sights will be visible
in the dark against the target, because you have
lit up the target with your flashlight.
I also filed the edges of the front of my rear
sight, so that it is smooth and rounded.  Now, it
won't cut my hand when I rack the slide.
I bet you always wondered what those people do,
who don't go out to bars dancing and drinking all
night long.
In the movie "American Sniper", there was a
scene in which the hero meets his wife at a bar.
She drinks so much that she vomits.  But, in the
33 years that I was in the service, I noticed that
the the operators were far more likely to be
studying their range books or maps of the area than
at the Enlisted Club.  The wife, Taya, is of course
the real heroine of the story.  She is waiting for
the guy when he returns from deployment, even
multiple deployments.

Did he pick the one with the largest audience

having unarmed victims to prey upon.

     Tom Clark writes --
Practice With You Support Side Hand.
Suarez instructor Jack Rumbaugh shared many
years ago how to enhance the use of one’s support
side hand – for many activities including shooting.
This is not an overnight process, but over several
months one can notice an improvement in nearly all
“off side” hand manipulations including the
primary goal of shooting.
It goes like this: Practice using your off
side hand for many daily activities – it will seem
clumsy at first but repeated effort will “train
your brain.”  In right-hand context these would be
simple activities such as brush or comb the hair
on the left side of your head with your left hand,
brush the teeth on the left side of your mouth
with your left hand.  These are easily done
private activities in which you will notice
improvement over time.  Get bolder and try holding
your fork in the left hand to eat food on the
left side of your plate. When tying your shoes,
shift function of your hands. And other similar
activities (you can figure them out) will help
get the neural pathways exercised to getting the
“off side” arm, hand, and fingers under better
control of the brain.  THEN – when on the range
most will see a significant improvement in the
ability to manipulate and accurately shoot their
gun with the “other” hand.   Of course dry fire
training is always in order too – for both hands.
Most find it easy to incorporate the basic
brushing and other activities to alternating hands
in their daily routine and keep those neural
pathways open.  I suspect that like most shooting
skills this is perishable and fades over time if
not used – so permanently incorporating these
activities into one’s routine has value.

******************************************

Jon Low:  Why would appendix carry (in front
of the hip bone at 1 or 2 o'clock, for a right
hander) be faster than 3 o'clock for a right
hander or 9 o'clock for a left hander?

Tom Clark:  I analyzed my different physical
movements between AIWB (Appendix Inside the Waist
Band) and IWB at 3 o'clock.  What I found is that
there is no (or very minimal) shoulder movement
needed when drawing and initial presentation from
AIWB, just the lower arm and wrist and consequently
less motion required.  So the elbow up, elbow down
movements which also involve the shoulder are not
needed.  The rotating of the AIWB barrel to be
parallel to the ground is nearly instinctive and
occurs concurrently with the muzzle is clearing
the holster.  So my take is less actual movement,
so simpler and less time to execute and get the
gun-on-the-threat.
I also found that:
1 - Clearing my cover garment is faster and simpler
as there is less motion of the support hand to
clear the area.
2 – There is less “telegraphing” of intentions
because of less actual movement.
3 – The AIWB draw can easily be done from an
apparently relaxed position of crossed hands in
the belt buckle area.  (One can “pre-stage” without
being obvious)
4 – Drawing while seated is easily done from AIWB.
Even in a car with the seat belt in place.
(Simply pull the cover garment from under the
seat belt in advance.)
5 – If needed, I can – without telegraphing a
typical draw – reach under my cover garment and
establish my grip.
6 – And if #5 is used, can draw and shoot thought
my cover garment saving more time and motion.
This does run the risk of getting only one shot as
the slide may not reciprocate fully or the ejected
case may not clear the gun.  Certainly not
preferable, but a tool in the drawer.
One can try AIWB actions with a blue gun and
draw from a plain old “Mexican” carry – where one
just sticks the gun inside the belt around the
appendix area sans holster.  Then with a good AIWB
holster the presentation should be smooth and the
draw resistance minimal.
There are of course many arguments that even
professionals sometimes have ADs (Accidental
Discharges) and that drawing from an AIWB would be
a very bad time to have that occur.  That is true
I’m sure and that is certainly a factor to consider
when evaluating AIWB.  That same drawing from a
holster AD would be what gets people shot in the
thigh, knee, calf, heel, and buttock when the
finger discipline is absent.  And so while it might
be “acceptable” to shoot one’s self in the other
areas than a shot near or on the testicles or
femoral artery would be more devastating.
Actually the one drawing from AIWB AD that I
witnessed was this:  Individual trying AIWB’s on
both the strong and support side – two guns. The
drill was draw from the strong side and shoot to
slide lock, then use a New York reload and draw and
shoot from the support side. When drawing from the
support side one individual had an AD and the round
went in the top of the support side thigh and out
by the knee.   No one was certain precisely when
the AD occurred, and we thought it likely to have
been after clearing the holster as there was no
apparent damage to the holster and the entry area
went through his trousers and was about six inches
below the belt line.   I’d add to this that I
suspect most ADs that occur when drawing are
immediately after the gun (and trigger) are out of
the holster and connected with an errant finger –
I don’t see any likelihood of an errant finger AD
while the gun is seated in the holster but only
after the trigger is accessible.

Bill Hayes:  My unscientific analysis agrees with
you (Tom Clark) in that the AIWB carry is much easier, smoother
and faster for this 71 year old shooter.  This has
become especially true since both rotator cuffs
have deteriorated.  I might also mention that
drawing with the support hand from a strong AIWB is
much easier than a 3 o'clock position.  This could
be a variable depending on the individuals
flexibility.  Another thing that AIWB carry does
for me is eliminate the butt of my full sized M&P
from hitting the backs of chairs with an annoying
"clunk".  A subcompact gun or a large bodied person
may not have this problem but I prefer at least a
compact or full size size defensive handgun.
I do not carry AIWB on my support (left) side
but normally carry an M&P 9 Shield in my left
pocket and have begun using my support hand more
for routine tasks in an attempt to improve my
coordination.
I think Larry Vickers has probably done the
wise thing by prohibiting AIWB carry in his
classes.  He specifically stated that he was not
anti AIWB but just did not want the liability with
unknown experience levels.
One other thing is that clearing the cover
garment is easier for me with AIWB.  I typically
carry with a button shirt left outside the pants
with the last button unsecured.  I can usually
begin to clear the weapon with and upward movement
of my support hand and assist with the thumb of my
strong hand as it reaches for the weapon.  This is
the way I practice dry fire and live even if the
"rules" do not require a cover garment.
Occasionally I am asked if I am concerned
about shooting myself.  My reply is, "Keep your
finger off the trigger until you are pointed at
the target and have decided to shoot".

* Drink water. *
Do not drink sugary drinks (soda pop,

Do not drink diet drinks.  The
chemicals that claim to be artificial

interests at heart.  If the artificial
sweeteners don’t taste terrible to you,
you suffer from a genetic defect.  (You

Do not drink caffeinated drinks (tea,
coffee, Red Bull, etc.).  Caffeine is a
stimulant that will increase your pulse
rate and all kinds of other bad things.
It is a diuretic that will dehydrate you
by causing urination.
Do not drink alcohol.  Alcohol is a
diuretic.  It is an intoxicant.
If someone offers you alcohol, respond
“No thank you, I’m in training.”
“What?  You think you’re going to

“Yes.”  Should be your serious response,
as you look them in the eye.  Your body
language should say, I’m a winner, you’re a
pathetic alcoholic who is contributing to
the delinquency of a minor.
How do you know that you are drinking
enough water?  You generate large volumes
of clear urine.  Your urine should always
be clear.  If it is yellow or pungent,
you are stressing your kidneys, which will
eventually lead to renal disease.  (Avoid
kidney stones by drinking water.)
* Eat healthy. *
Do not eat sugary candy.  Consider the
risk of diabetes.
Do not eat anything with corn syrup.
Read the labels of everything you eat.
If you don’t know what the chemical is,
don’t eat it.  If the chemical is bad,
don’t eat it.  Make this part of your
common sense.
* Exercise. *
     Exercise will eliminate many health
problems and prevent all kinds of health
problems.
     Stretch before to prevent injury.
Stretch after to lengthen muscles.
Elevate your pulse rate to 80% of
maximum and hold it there for 20 minutes,
every day, for long term cardiovascular
health.
     Maintain symmetry.  Asymmetric muscle
development around a joint will cause join
problems.  Asymmetric muscle development
with respect to left-right will adversely
affect your gait.
* Do not smoke. *
Nicotine is a highly toxic alkaloid,
found in tobacco, and used as an insecticide.
Make this part of your common sense.

Remember, the younger kids are watching
and copying you.  Your children will copy
your behavior.  It doesn’t matter what you
say.  They will copy what you do.
So, set the example.  Lead by example.

Dental health is essential for general health.
My dental hygienist, Renee Cleary, says you
have to floss (at least) daily.  Flossing is not
primarily to remove food from between your teeth.
The primary reason is to scrape off plaque from
around your teeth below the gum line, where the
toothbrush cannot reach.  If you don’t remove the
plaque, it will turn into tartar or calculus;
definition -- a hard, yellowish to brownish-black
deposit on teeth formed largely through the
mineralization of dead bacteria in dental plaques
by the calcium salts in salivary secretions and
subgingival transudates.
Bend the floss around the tooth and scrape up
and down.  Do not saw the tooth with the floss.
Bleeding indicates the gums are being irritated
by the plaque.  After a few days of flossing the
gums will get healthy and stop bleeding.

Greetings Sheepdogs,

***** Mindset *****

"The less you know,
the less you think there is to learn."
-- Kathy Jackson

At Front Sight, I took a class in which
the instructor asked us,
"Would you be willing to use lethal force to
stop a rape in progress?"
It was part of a lecture in which the instructor
was trying to get us to think about in which
situations we would use lethal force and in
which situations we would not.  The discussion
was along the lines of, is the victim
in imminent danger of death or serious bodily
injury?  One could argue that she is not, so
lethal force is not justified.  (Yes, we discussed
transmission of diseases and pregnancy.)
Under the Uniform Code of Military Justice,
rape is a capital crime.  But, I don't think it
is a capital crime in any state of the United
States of America.
If it's just one assailant, you could just
grab him and yank him off her.
No way!  I'm not going hands on with anyone.
I'm not a cop, so I'm not required to.
I'm not stupid, I could get hurt (or killed).
The purpose of practicing marksmanship is so
that we don't have to close with the enemy.
     If it's multiple assailants ...
I'm not getting close enough for anyone to touch me.
But, of course, this presupposes that we can
identify a rape in progress.  Can you?  Have you
had any training in doing so?  Do you have any
experience?  Have you ever seen a rape in
progress?
     I don't need a class.  I can recognize
a rape when I see it.
     Well, no, that's false.
In the early 80's I was a Lance Corporal and
driving the Jeep for the Sergeant of the Guard.
We were patrolling around Kaneohe Marine Corps
Air Station (presently Marine Base Hawaii) in the
middle of the night.  On the beach by Pyramid Rock,
we see two naked people rolling around in the
sand yelling and screaming.  So, we jump out and
pull them apart and separate them.  The Sergeant
takes the lady to the Jeep and I hold the young
male Marine on the ground.
The Sergeant asks the lady, "Were you being raped?"
     She says, "No."
(Yeah, there's a lot more to this story,
but I'll spare you the details.)  The point is,
just because he is copulating and beating her in
a public place and she's screaming bloody murder,
does not mean it's rape.  Rape requires lack of
consent.  Regardless of her behavior, she was
a consenting participant.
(We should have asked the Marine if he was being
raped, but this was the early 80's.)

Fighting: Be honest to the problem, be honest to yourself
http://www.recoilweb.com/fighting-be-honest-to-the-problem-be-honest-to-yourself-67383.html
Craig Douglas says there is no point in teaching
something the student can't do, even if you think it's
a good technique.
John Farnam said a similar thing in that he adjusts
the course content to the students capabilities.
The big gun schools with their big classes can't
do this.  And many have a philosophy of consistency
of content (as McDonalds restaurants) and sticking to
the script (for consistency of product, the trained
student being the product of the gun school).
That's why I believe in small classes.  I never
take more than 5 students in a class.  You have to be
able to adjust the curriculum to the students.
If the student can't do something because his muscles
are too tight, you have to tell him to stretch.  If he
can't do something because he is too fat, you have to
tell him to lose weight.  Not telling him these things,
because you don't want to hurt his feelings is a grave
disservice to the student.

Some people follow instructions and succeed.
Some people don’t follow instructions and wonder
why they failed.
Blind spots are not things you can’t see.
Blind spots are things you don’t know that you
can’t see.  Following instructions avoids blind
spots.  Refusing to follow instructions causes
blind spots and is why the Boy Scout Law says,
a Scout is obedient.  [In recruit training, the
Drill Instructors told us a story to explain
why immediate obedience to orders is essential.
A group of Marines were sitting around a fire
to keep warm.  Mortar shells were randomly
landing around them.  A lieutenant tells them
to take cover.  The Marines ignore the lieutenant
because he was not in their chain of command
and they didn't know him.  A mortar round lands
in the fire and kills the Marines.  The Marines
did not see that the mortar crew was adjusting
fire.  The lieutenant saw what was going on.
The Marines failed to obey orders and died.
From the Vietnam War as told by Drill Instructor
Sgt. Sheikle who was an eye witness to the events.
Sgt. Sheikle was a helicopter machine-gunner.]
Superstitions are not things that you know
are false.  Superstitions are things that you
know are true, that are false.  The purpose of a
coach is to inform you of superstitions and
blind spots.  It is your choice to make use of
the coach or ignore him.
Why follow the instructions of the instructor,
coach, teacher, pastor, etc.?  Because they have
training or experience that you don't.  People
learn from their experiences (hopefully).  Smart
people learn from the experiences of others.
I was reading "In the Name of Self Defense"
by MacYoung.  I thought to myself, this stuff is
obvious.  Then I stopped, took a step back, and
thought.  The material appears obvious after
reading it.  But, before reading it, none of it
was obvious.  In fact, it wasn't known to me at all.

jury then does not get to decide if you were justified in
using deadly force."
"There is one thing that will restore your right

and that is withdrawing from the altercation. Your
claim to self defense can be restored if you can show
evidence that you reasonably withdrew from the

     Dialing 911
Remember I told you about the exercise at Tactical Response
where under stress during a tactical scenario the students
tried to dial 911 on their cell phones and couldn't do it?
Well, Marc MacYoung in his book
"In The Name Of Self-Defense" suggests a solution.
"... tuck the arm of your phone hand against your body,
then dial."
The problem is that both hands are moving (trembling,
shaking with adrenaline).  By stabilizing one hand, the
operation gets much easier.
This book is full of such trade craft.

Question:  My wife and I went for a walk on the beach yesterday,
and given current events and warnings, I felt compelled not to
be caught unarmed.  I am now on a quest to determine the best
smallest handgun to carry that I can shoot accurately.  A knife
is better than fists.  An American Arms 22 long rifle 5 shot
revolver is better than a knife.  Your thoughts?

Answer:
Fists should not be on your list at all.  If you punch
someone with your fist, you may break your fingers or wrist.
(Using the side of your fist, as a hammer strike, won't
hurt you.)
The Marine Corps LINE hand to hand combat program only
used open hand techniques.  (an oldie but goodie)
Using a knife is lethal force in every jurisdiction
that I know of.  So, carrying a knife instead of a pistol
reduces your range without reducing your liability.  So,
carry the pistol.
If you can't legally carry the pistol, move out of
that jurisdiction.  It's a free country, you can move
easily.  I did.  My ancestors did.  I have no sympathy
for people who live under oppression when they can move.
My recommendation would be a .38 Special hammerless
revolver with at least a 3 inch barrel.
If you read the technical specs and standards documents,
you will see that the modern revolver cartridges really need
(expect) at least a 4 inch barrel to effectively burn the
powder in the case.  So, 3 inches is not really sufficient,
but concealable.  [I know you are thinking about a 2 inch
barrel.  But, you need large quantities of fast burning
powder to make a 2 inch barrel effective.  (Magnums get their
power from large quantities of slow burning powder.  Slow
burning so as not to generate dangerously high chamber
pressures.  So, they need long barrels to be effective.)
But, ya the 2 inch barrel is more concealable.
I am sure the 2 inch barrel is combat effective
at contact distances.  But, I am an engineer.  So, the
theory bothers me psychologically.  Hence, I would
adjust my clothing and carry a longer barrel.]
The hammerless recommendation is so that the revolver
may be fired from within a pocket or purse without the
hammer getting caught on anything.  Revolvers are also
better in this situation, as semi-autos may malfunction
because there is insufficient space for the expended cases
to eject.
The .38 Special recommendation is because it is
commonly available, effective for self-defense, and the
recoil is manageable.  The .357 Magnums are more expensive,
and it makes no sense to practice with .38 Specials and
then carry .357 Magnums, as they will give you a different
point of impact and different recoil.
If you shoot a hollow point bullet from within a pocket
or purse, the bullet's cavity will immediately be plugged
with material.  The body's fluids will not be able to enter
the hollow point, so there won't be much hydrodynamic
(hydrostatic?)
pressure to cause the bullet to expand.  Even soft solids
just don't behave as fluids.  So, I would shoot copper
jacketed round nose bullets.  They are effective and much
cheaper than hollow point ammunition.
Unfortunately, there are revolvers on Gun Broker and
such that don't have trigger guards.  This is shear
stupidity.
No matter what revolver you choose, you must carry
it in a correct, properly fitting holster.  To do otherwise
is asking for negligent discharges.
I intentionally neglect to mention makes and models.
Because I am not competent to do so.
Of course, the zeroth recommendation is to keep your
head up and looking around so that you see the bad guy in
time to walk away.
If the enemy is within 21 feet (distance from wall to
wall of a room indoors, two car lengths outdoors), the
Teuller Drill tells us that you won't have time to deploy
a weapon before the assailant is on you.  So, you must
have hand to hand techniques practiced and reflexively
available to you (in your repertoire).  Study Krav Maga.

Well, Duh!  If you give criminals sanctuary
in your city, they are going to stay in your city;
even after being deported 5 times.

And they are going to do what criminals do,
murder your residents.  Yet another reason to
get training, look around, and always carry.
By the way, the pistol that the illegal alien

belonged to a U.S. Bureau of Land Management agent.

Federal agents lose hundreds of firearms
every year.  Some of them machineguns.

You wouldn't believe the number of federal
agents running around with guns and badges.  Just
about every bureaucracy has its own police force.
