Operativo “Cisne negro”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPhFWHJsgkc
Watch the helmet cam footage of the raid that
resulted in the capture of the Mexican Cartel drug
lord known as “El Chapo.” The soldiers ended up
killing five of El Chapo’s bodyguards and wounding
several more. Watch the tactics. These guys are
fairly well trained. The raid got chaotic at times,
but they did a pretty good job clearing a very
difficult structure. Only one of the Marines was
wounded in the 15 minute gunfight.
Note how they use barricades and cover in the
running gunfight. Note how they fight from the
hallways and make limited penetration into the
rooms. Note how slowly they go. If your SWAT team
is busting in to every target as fast as possible
and “running the walls” of every room, your tactics
are out of date. Slow down. Have good command and
control. Cover every uncleared area. Then clear
the structure room by room, doing the majority of
your work from outside in the hallway before you
physically enter the room. -- Active Response Training

SSgt.,
I read the little section about the Glock mag
baseplates and I too struggled with em until I
discovered a secret about the mags. There is a
plate on the base of the spring. That's what
you're pushing in through that little hole in the
bottom. This plate is near the same dimension as
the inside of the mag body. If you push that in
just a fraction of an inch, it's still in the area
that you'll apply the clamp. Using a small
Phillips screwdriver, I push that plate in as deep
as I can. Then you can use your fingers to squeeze
the mag body or (as I prefer) use a pair of pliers
to squeeze. Once squeezed, hold firmly and remove
the screwdriver. The plate will come down a little
but stop above where you're pliers are squeezing
the mag body. Then easily slide the base plate off.
Hope this helps you and if you could spread the
word, maybe it'll help many others!

Jon,
As always, thanks for putting this together.
A comment on the “Prescription Shooting
Glasses” notes. As a lifelong wearer of prescription
glasses, and of course with multiple focal fields for
the last 30 years I have an acute sense of the
problem of clearly seeing the front sight. And I can
tell that looking at this from 70+ years the issue
only gets worse as time passes. So I offer this:
For use in handgun use in hunting, competition,
and generally on the range, having these special
shooting glasses is an excellent method to be able to
continually “dig out the front sight” and make your
hits.
BUT – I’d suggest that for defensive handgun use
one should also train to use whatever vision you have
when you are walking on the street. There will be no
opportunity to say: “Wait a moment mister bad guy,
let me put my specially adapted shooting glasses on
first”. You must go with what you’ve got. And so
some drills with “what you’ve got” are also in order.
Other solutions to mitigate the problem (of older
age vision) might be
(a) get an oversized and/or very bright front sight or
(b) get a red dot sight mounted on your pistol.
I’m sure there are other successful solutions as well,
but these two work for me. My smaller guns (when I
carry them) have a bright luminescent light tube for
the front sight, the larger ones on which I can mount
a Trijicon RMR Red dot (which I usually carry) have
that.
One could write a whole book on this issue,
I just want to make the point that one also needs
to train with what you’ve got for defensive shooting
scenarios.

Notes from the Sheepdog Seminar
http://sheepdogseminars.com/
on protecting your church, school, etc.
We are at war. The terrorists are here in our
country. They are preparing and training.
-
What every speaker said, "Train, train, train!"
If you carry a gun without training, you are worse than
useless, you are dangerous. If you apply a tourniquet,
without knowing what you're doing, the victim could bleed
to death or you could cause an unnecessary amputation.
Your church safety team should have medical personel,
technical (the persons who are physically in the building
on a regular basis, custodial, janitorial, and maintenance
personel), and protection (the trained and armed personel).
If there is any chance that you can't identify the
friendlies, use banners. You keep them in a pouch on
your belt and pull them out and drape them over your torso
(as in the Miss America pagent where the banner
says "Miss Tennessee").
Do a risk survey. You can't analyze or plan without
the facts.
Lock the doors.
Keep it simple.
Know what the insurance policy says.
Network with other churches and law enforcement.
Train and drill. Reacting to an emergency with well
trained personel is like playing Jazz music. Everyone
is not reading off the same sheet of music, as this would
be unrealistic, because you cannot predict the situation.
Everyone is ad libbing.
Train your women, because they are primary targets
of rape and other crimes. For those who don't want to
carry a gun, hold classes on pepper spray.
The Department of Homeland Security says that
terrorist groups monitor church web sites. This statement
is not classified and was cleared for release at the
seminar.
Don't expect to be understood. The limp dick liberals
will mock you, and demand that the church be a gun free
zone. Be strong and fight because you are right. All
mass murders occur in gun free zones.
Keep a rifle in your car. Terrorists will have
body armor and helments. So, you need something that
can penetrate. Shotguns are suboptimal, because you can
carry an ammo can of 1000 rifle rounds, but you need a
wheelbarrow to carry 1000 shotgun rounds.
Keep smoke grenades in your car.
Of course, you have to practice with these tools to
be able to use them effectively. You will win if you
are prepared. Practice your tactical shooting. Practice
your martial arts.
"A golf course is a willful misuse of a rifle range."
-- Col. Dave Grossman
You will not panic or flee, because love quenches fear.
-
A group of us from my church went to the Sheepdog Seminar
in Chattanooga yesterday (Saturday, 1/30/16).
http://www.sheepdogsafetytraining.com/
We learned a lot.
All mass murderers in recent American history have one
thing in common. They watch violent movies repeatedly
and to excess (for instance watching "Natural Born Killers"
50 times, which would not have been physically possible
in earlier times) and play violent video games (e.g. Grand
Theft Auto, et al) repeatedly and to excess. This caused a
Pavlovian conditioning. They associated violence with
good feelings and getting rewards.
The Hollywood activist who claim that violent movies and
games do not cause violence in our society are lying to you.
Please avoid violent video games and movies. Please
prevent your children from watching violent movies and
playing violent video games.
-
Run, Hide, Fight
If anyone attacks your school, church, etc., RUN!
People who hide get killed, when the bad guys find them.
You can't be killed if you aren't there. [This is the tactically
and statistically correct thing to do. No matter what anyone
else says. Remember, public school teachers, public school
principals, firemen, and policemen all work for the government,
so their priority is to protect the government from liability.
Why else would gun free zones exist? Gun free zones create
unarmed victims for armed criminals to prey upon. All mass
murders occur in gun free zones.]
If you are trapped and cannot run, lock the door and
barricade all paths to your HIDE.
If the enemy finds you, FIGHT!
Gouge eyes. This will give you time to escape.
Stomp on feet in close to the shin, not on the toes. The small
bones of the foot are easily broken. The enemy likely has steel
toed boots or combat boots, and stomping on the toes is
generally not effective. This will give you time to escape.
BITE! Anywhere, but especially on the sides of the neck
to tear the carotid arteries. Use the teeth in the front of your
mouth, not your molars. The intent is to tear the flesh,
not to masticate. This will give you time to escape.
May you never have occasion to Run, Hide, Fight.
But if you do, remember, your loved ones are depending on you.

And that's not easy to do.
When I was issued my courier card in the Marine
Corps, we were given a briefing. During the briefing,
they told us about an incident in which uniformed
law enforcement officers in marked cars pulled over
the couriers and attempted to arrest the couriers.
The couriers explain to the officers that they were
couriers and showed the LEO's their courier cards.
The couriers told the LEO's that they were carrying
classified material and could not allow the LEO's
to arrest them. ...
The couriers ended up shooting and killing the LEO's.
We were told that that was the correct thing to do.
And that we were expected to do likewise.
(If they had been real LEO's, it would have been a full
blown international incident.)
Being a Marine aint easy. We came real close
to this in Kyrgyzstan in 2000. The cops were demanding
a bribe and we were ready to shoot the cops. But,
our local guide was able to get the cops to accept
the money that we had.

I still found it very difficult to get the base
plates off of my magazines. So, I just cut the
little tabs off the magazine bodies,
which is easy to do with a sharp knife.
Now, the base plates slide on and off easily.
We teach the modern theory of defensive
pistol craft that Col. Jeff Cooper formalize and
codified. In this system, one pulls on the
magazine, after banging it into the magazine well,
to ensure it is locked in place. You generally
can't do that with Glocks because there is no
forward facing lip to get your fingers on to pull.
So, I took a knife and cut away the bottom
of the forward facing edge of my magazine well.
Now, I can get my fingers on the forward lip of
the magazine to pull it out. Or, know that it's
locked in place.
The plastic frame of the Glock is easy to
whittle with a sharp knife. A set of steel
files and some patience will clean things up
nicely. I have found that the plastic is so
soft that finishing work can be done with one's
finger nails.
I had to file off the sharp edges on the
front of my rear sight to avoid cutting my
hand when racking the slide.
I had to cut grooves into the sides of
my slide near the muzzle to allow sufficient
grip to perform a chamber check.
And after all of this work and firing the
pistol at a USPSA match, I have found that
when firing with one hand, I cannot control
the recoil. The girth of the grip is just too
large.
The trigger is such that the user cannot
distinguish between slack and sear engagement.
There is no hard stop after taking up the
slack, and before the sear starts moving.
So, if you know anyone with large hands
and long fingers, who likes this sort of
trigger, let me know. Otherwise, I'm donating
it to the Wilson County Friends of the NRA banquet.

"Don't move." is two syllables. "Stop." is one syllable.
We were always taught to say "Stop!" or "Halt!"
"Don't move!" is a negative statement.
"Stop!" is a positive statement. It takes much less
analysis on the part of the criminal to process a positive
statement. Much less chance of a misunderstanding.
The assailant might have heard you say, "Move!", when you
actually said, "Don't move!". Or, maybe you thought you
said, "Don't move!", but actually said, "Move!".
You think that's crazy? It's not. It's reality. And
then there is what shows up on the witness' cell phone
camera, which will probably be entirely different from
what you remember.
You think I'm joking. But, I'm not.
That's why police departments have policies of immediately
removing the officer involved in the shooting from the
scene and not interviewing him until after he's had a

When teaching a student, if the student does not
do what you are teaching, don't repeat what you just
said. This is irritating for everyone. The student
obviously did not understand you the first time.
There is no reason to believe that he will understand
you any better when you repeat the same verbiage.
As William Zinsser says in "On Writing Well", assume
your audience is intelligent; ignorant, but intelligent.
You, the instructor, are not communicating. Assume
responsibility for this lack of communication and
change tack (An approach to accomplishing a goal
or a method of dealing with a problem. 4th definition
in the American Heritage Dictionary.).
Suggestions:
Mirror -- stand facing the student and execute the
mirror image of the action. So, he can see what to
do as if looking in a mirror.
Verbiage -- use detailed explicit verbiage to explain
the technique, avoiding all acronyms and jargon.
This is actually quite difficult, because we assume
a cultural background that the student does not have.
Revert -- rather than explaining the technique,
explain what we are trying to accomplish. The
student will often see a path to the goal and
execute an alternate technique or may execute the
intended technique. Either way he wins. If his technique
is unsafe, explain why. Gently coax him to the correct
technique.

Review (sort of) of the Glock 41 Gen4, .45 Auto.
https://us.glock.com/products/model/g41gen4
I bought a new in the box Glock 41. I cleaned it and
dry fired it and did some reloading and malfunction
clearing drills with it. The manual says you must
clean it before firing it for the first time.
It has a cheap plastic adjustable rear sight.
I will have to replace it. It jiggles. I already
had to take a file and smooth off the sharp edges
on the front of the rear sight, so I could rack the
slide without cutting my hand.
The trigger does not have a hard stop between slack
and sear engagement. This is apparently intentional,
as there is a school of thought in the self-defense
industry that advocates a smooth pull from trigger
reset to firing, rather than staging the trigger by
taking out the slack first and then pressing to
release the shot. I think that being able to take out
the slack first and then pressing to release the shot
is better. But, the trigger on this Glock 41 is
reliable and consistent.
I have always advocated simple black sights,
rectangular post front sight and rectangular notch
rear sight. Because in the dark with a flashlight
you won't see any paint on your sights. You will
only see the silhouette of the sights. So, this
is the sighting system you should always be using,
because the painted markings will give you a
different point of impact.
But, I've changed my mind since using the
Glock sights on various colored backgrounds in daylight
conditions. On a bright white background the black
outline of the sights shows up, while the white
painted parts disappear. On a dark black background,
the black parts of the sight disappear, but the
white painted parts show up clearly. So, high
contrast sights are effective in daylight conditions.
(That's why graphic artist write their lettering
with contrasting shadow when the text runs across
different background colors. This ensures the
lettering will be visible.)
The rear sight has the white paint
going all the way to the top of the rear sight.
Unfortunately, the front sight has a white disk
inside the black rectangular front sight. So, the
shooter cannot level the top of the front sight
with the top of the rear sight when using the white
painted areas. I will have to paint the front sight
to get the white area to go up to the top of the
front sight.
I will have to machine some grooves into the
sides of the slide to allow me to do a chamber
check. (I'm sure this will void the warranty.
But, the finish on the slide is just too smooth
and slick.) I have tried gluing on rough material,
as used on the floor of bathtubs or steps. But, I
haven't found anything that will stick to the modern
Glock finish.
Glock's literature lists the Glock 41 as a
competition pistol, as opposed to a tactical pistol.
The action is tight. It does not rattle when you
shake it. Which is good for accuracy, but bad for
reliability, as sand and grit can jam a tight slide.
The grip is big, without any of the back straps.
Attaching one of the 4 included back straps would
make the grip even bigger. This pistol is designed
for people with very large hands and long fingers.
The Springfield Armory XD in .45 ACP has a smaller
grip, for the same 13 round magazine capacity. That
extra layer of plastic over the steel magazine adds
significant girth to the grip size.
The magazine release may be reversed for left
handers. So, it is left or right handed, but it is
not ambidextrous.
The literature says that the barrel has a right
hand twist octagonal bore. But, my barrel has
lands and grooves rifling. (Yes, I have seen the
octagonal bores, so I know the difference.)
I was impressed by the mirror finish of the bore.
It makes cleaning the bore very easy.

That's why police departments have policies of immediately
removing the officer involved in the shooting from the
scene and not interviewing him until after he's had a
good night's sleep. You should do the same.

Gently coax him to the correct
technique.

Greetings Sheepdogs,

I met a group of friends for dinner at a restaurant.
When my friends entered and sat, we looked at each other
considering what stage of life the others were in and what
family ties they had. I spoke up first.
"I have no wife and kids to think about. (My kids are
grown with families of their own.) So, I am the alpha
sheepdog. If we are attacked. I will immediately
counter attack. Your job is to ensure the escape of those
in our party. Escape routes are front doors, back door
through the kitchen, and exit down the hallway toward the
restrooms (Which I knew of because I had used the restrooms
after being seated by the host.)." (I always arrive early
so as not to get ambushed. I always recon before sitting
down and getting comfortable. I'm always in the tactical
seat, because I get there early.)
The others at the table agreed.
A lady at the next table, over hearing us, asked,
"What are you people?"
"We're the church planning committee." I responded.

I enthusiastically recommend the course. (It is physically
strenuous.) Some things I learned:
You have to have the mind set in order to access your
skill set.
Bite to your canines or incisors. We do not intend
to masticate and swallow, only to tear out flesh, hopefully
severing arteries.
Why are you scared of a growling dog? The dog only
has teeth. You have teeth, two arms, two legs, and
training. You can defeat the dog. The dog's brain is
behind its eyes. You can easily gouge through the eye into
the brain. You can easily bite through the front of its
neck to severe its carotid arteries.
A couple years ago, the neighbor's dogs were chasing
my girlfriend's son around. When I went out to confront
the neighbor, his dogs started growling at me. I made a
hard decision at that point to immediately kill the dogs.
I was not going back into the house to get my gun. I was
going to kills the dogs right now with my hands and teeth.
Before I charged, the dogs ran away. That is reality.
That is mind set. That is why I rarely have a girlfriend.

I see people shooting pistols with incorrect

Greetings Sheepdogs,
***** Mindset *****
Last night, 11/17/15, Federal Bureau of
Investigation, Assistant Special Agent in
Charge (of the Nashville, TN area),
Jeffery E. Peterson spoke to the Tennessee
Firearms Association. I paraphrase.
He told us that, in the event of an active shooter
incident, the best course of action for the individual's
survival is to run. Get out of the building. Get out
of the area. Because those who hide get killed.
Don't hide, run!
If you decide to fight the bad guy, consider
your competence and chaos:
Competence --
He gave the example of persons driving their cars in
a snow storm on icy roads. The average drive (who
learned to drive from his parents) driving a rear-wheel
drive economy car might end up off the road in a ditch.
Whereas, the highly trained driver (military, police,
or private driving school) driving an all-wheel drive
sedan, might have no problem getting where she's going.
Do you know that you can operate in a high stress
situation while injured, distinguish between good guys
and bad gals with insufficient information, move quickly
while injured, apply accurate fire to moving targets at
varying distances while moving yourself, and while
getting shot at? Do you know that your equipment will
function under adverse conditions (or does your pistol
malfunction every so often on the range)? If not,
you might consider running away. Because getting
yourself killed isn't going to help anyone. While on
the other hand, being a good witness, giving the police
accurate timely information on which they can operate
would be great for everyone.
Chaos --
Consider that when the law enforcement officers
arrive on the scene the situation will be chaotic.
The officers will have insufficient information and
possibly false information (because when people
panic, they misinterpret observations, so the witness
reports are often wrong). This means there is a
real danger that you will be shot by responding officers
because you are holding a pistol. The LEOs are not
going to have time to interview you before deciding
whether or not to shoot you.
Once, you have incapacitated the bad guy and
determined that there are no other bad guys, you need
to separate yourself from your pistol and and show
that your hands are empty to avoid getting shot by
responding officers.
Since the Columbine incident, law enforcement
officers in our country are taught ALERRT
(Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training).
The protocol for an active shooter incident used to be
to secure the perimeter and call for tactical support.
But, too many people died at Columbine. So, ALERRT
training says, whoever is there should immediately
counter attack. [Sounds like what we learned in the
Marine Corps, immediately counter attack any attack.]
This is of course, much more dangerous for the
responding officer. So, don't put yourself in a
position to get shot. Don't force the officer to
shoot you.
Always carry a spare magazine, because you will
need it to clear malfunctions.
If you're part of a security team for your church,
make sure you know who else is armed in the
congregation.

Greetings Sheepdogs,
***** Mindset *****
"Jennifer, a Deputy in Orlando, FL got shot
10 times. She shot and killed the two men
who were shooting her (only fair). She was
back on the job a year later."
-- Col. Dave Grossman
The Colonel was making the point that
getting shot need not stop you from doing.
It is fairly common not to know that you got
shot. That is why we teach our students to
examine themselves and others for injuries
after an incident. The adrenaline (epinephrine)
in your blood stream and other things may
prevent your awareness of the pain and burning
sensation.
"I was talking to a Navy Seal. I said, you're
not very big. The Sailor said, not many of us
are, we're just trained."
-- Jimmy Meeks
The pastor was making the point that
training is essential. What differentiates
sheepdogs from sheep is training. Many sheep
are willing to fight to protect others, (as
any parent would protect their child) but they
are not competent to do so. So, they lack the
confidence, so they don't fight. Or, they do
and get themselves killed. Which doesn't help
anyone.
The above is from a webinar with
Lt. Col. Dave Grossman,
Police Officer and Minister Jimmy Meeks, and
Church Security Expert Carl Chinn at
http://livestream.com/accounts/14289416/events/4481130
What I leaned from the webinar --
At church, lock all back doors. Force
everyone to come through the front doors. This
allows the sheepdogs to check out everyone entering
the building and it ensures everyone entering
knows that the sheepdogs are checking them out.
This prevents criminals from sneaking in without
being seen to commit crimes and escape without
being seen.
While everyone else is closing their eyes and
bowing their heads to pray, the sheepdogs must
pray with their eyes open and looking around.
Gideon chose his soldiers by how they drank water
at the lake. Those who brought the water up to
their mouth while looking around to the horizon,
Gideon chose. Those who put their face down to
the water and so could not see the horizon, Gideon
sent home.
Minister Meeks reported that two pastors had
recently been shot while praying. We must adapt
to reality and prevent this from happening.
I have been trained since birth to close my
eyes and bow my head when praying. I will have
difficulty breaking this habit. All of life is
intentionally breaking habits and intentionally
forming new habits.
***** Training *****
Incompetent people get themselves killed
when they try to defend others. Which doesn't
help anyone. Yes, training takes time and
commitment. Marine Corps Recruit Training takes
three months (full time, including weekends).
Training is not cheap. Training requires
sacrifice. Anything worthwhile in life requires
sacrifice.
Decide to get training. Get training.
And then, practice. Combat skills are perishable
skills. You must practice.

bowing their heads to pray, the sheepdogs must
pray with their eyes open and looking around.
Gideon chose his soldiers by how they drank water
at the lake. Those who brought the water up to
their mouth while looking around to the horizon,
Gideon chose. Those who put their face down to
the water and so could not see the horizon, Gideon
sent home.
Minister Meeks reported that two pastors had
recently been shot while praying. We must adapt
to reality and prevent this from happening.
I have been trained since birth to close my
eyes and bow my head when praying. I will have
difficulty breaking this habit. All of life is
intentionally breaking habits and intentionally
forming new habits.
***** Training *****
Incompetent people get themselves killed
when they try to defend others. Which doesn't
help anyone. Yes, training takes time and
commitment. Marine Corps Recruit Training takes
three months (full time, including weekends).
Training is not cheap. Training requires
sacrifice. Anything worthwhile in life requires
sacrifice.
Decide to get training. Get training.
And then, practice. Combat skills are perishable
skills. You must practice.

Slow is smooth. Smooth is efficient.
Efficient with practice is fast. (Practice
means 2000 repetitions. Which is the minimum
to engrain muscle memory.)

Colorado Springs, CO police officers no longer
take an annual physical fitness test. Because,

The Chicago, IL police department was toying
with the idea of eliminating the written test,
as it is discriminatory and prevents them from
hiring their quota of black officers.
