No, this was not a "stupid accident".

This was negligence on the part of the instructor for
leaving the students unattended.
This was negligence on the part of the instructor for
not instructing his students to keep their guns in
their holsters when not on the firing line and under
the supervision of the instructor.

This was negligence on the part of the training staff
for not having an assistant instructor watching the
students in the class.

This was negligence on the part of the student for
violating the safety rules. (Not keeping the pistol
pointed in a safe direction.  Not keeping his finger
off the trigger.)  The shooter has to violate at least
two safety rules to hurt someone.

This was negligence on the part of the other students
in the class for not screaming MUZZLE! FINGER! when
they saw the man pull his pistol out of his holster.

The student was not stupid.  The student was curious.

     Solution to the problem:
Explain and enforce the safety rules.
Explain to the students that it is their responsibility
to maintain a safe range.  They must speak up if they
see anything unsafe.
Maintain eyes on the students at all times.
[If you can't keep eyes on the students, get assistant
instructors to help you.  If you can't get assistant
instructor to help you, don't start the class.
Yes, you may have to refund the money.
Keep your priorities straight.]

-----------------------------------------------------------

I just got back from two weeks at Marine Corps annual
training.  We shot the 155mm Howitzers at Fort Drumm in
upstate New York.  The enemy has radar, artillery, and
missiles.  So, after firing we move before the enemy can
fire on us.  Just like self-defense pistol shooting.
While at Annual Training, the Navy Chaplain shared
some scripture with us.

Should I wear my gun while working?
"... Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and
held a weapon in the other, and each of the builders wore his sword
at his side as he worked."
Nehemiah 4:17-18, New International Version

Should I wear my gun all the time?
"... each had his weapon, even when he went for water."
Nehemiah 4:23, New International Version

Exercise.  Strengthen your hands and forearms particularly.
The usual warnings about checking with your doctor before
beginning any exercise regimen apply.
I know this may seem odd in a low intensity basic class,
but grip strength is one of the most important, and overlooked,
factors in the ability to shoot a major caliber handgun well.

Greetings Concealed Weapons Permittees,
When shooting with friends and family, please do
them a favor by doing a thorough equipment inspection
to make sure their equipment functions properly.
     Remove the magazine.
Chamber check to make sure the pistol is unloaded.
If the pistol has a magazine safety and will only fire
with a magazine inserted in the magazine well, insert an
empty magazine and make sure it is locked in place.
Keep the pistol pointed in a safe direction.
Press the trigger.  You should feel slack (no sear movement)
and then a hard stop (sear engagement).
Press through the hard stop to release the firing pin.  (If the
sear is machined correctly, the trigger release will be smooth
and crisp, no catching, no gritty feel, no friction.)
You should hear the click of the firing pin being driven forward.
Put a pencil in the barrel with the rubber eraser end toward
the firing pin and point the pistol up.  The firing mechanism
should have enough force to pop the pencil out of the barrel.
(Otherwise, the student is going to get a lot of misfires
due to light firing pin strikes.)
Press the trigger and hold it to the rear.  Rack the
slide.  Release the trigger to reset.  There should be a
distinct click on reset.  Take the slack out of the trigger.  There
should be a hard stop.  Press through the hard stop.  There
should be a distinct click as the firing pin is driven forward.
Make sure the pistol does not fire when any one of the
safeties is on.
Make sure the pistol does not fire when holstering with
the safeties off.  (Yes, some ill-fitting holsters will press
the trigger when holstering.)
Make sure the pistol does not fall out of the holster
when you turn it upside down and shake it.
Make sure the mouth of the holster stays open, so the
student can holster with one hand.  (Two handed holstering
causes the shooter to muzzle his support side hand.)

A friend asked me to remove him from this mailing list.
He said that he could not have anyone think that he carried
a concealed weapon because it is prohibited where he lives
and works.  He could not risk receiving such emails.
     Freedom is very expensive.

Greetings Concealed Weapons Permittees,
May I invite your attention to the following?

My fencing coaches, Lou Bankuti and Bruno Santonocito,
told me that tense muscles are slow, relaxed muscles are
fast.  So, whenever I'm shooting, I strive for relaxed
muscles.  Head erect, shoulders down and relaxed.
May I suggest you practice in a mirror to see
what you are doing?  I have found mirror practice very
useful.  I found my right shoulder way up.  I would not
have believed it until I saw it with my own eyes.
I would have sworn that my shoulders were down and relaxed.

I always liked the desert out there.  The Marine Corps
stores vehicles parked out in the dry atmosphere.
A great place to run in the morning.

Store firearms and ammunition separately to deny
a burglar a complete system.  Lock up all firearms
and ammunition when you’re not using them, just
as you would lock your car or house in a high
crime area.  Firearms used for self-defense
(loaded) must be kept out of reach of untrained
children, untrained adults, and those unauthorized.
Security by obscurity is cryptologically wrong.
Hiding your guns will not work.  Children are
curious and will search, often more efficiently
than police.  So, the firearms must be locked
in secure containers, closets, or safes.

Advise your friends to get competent gun training.
The level of firearms competence in the U.S. is
pathetically low because keeping and bearing arms is
a right, so no one can force anyone to seek training.
The result is that people learn from their parents,
grandparents, or other relatives or friends, most of
whom have had no training.  So, bad habits get passed
along as the correct way to do things.  Break this
cycle of incompetence by encouraging your friends to
seek out competent training.

Slow is smooth.  Smooth is efficient.  Efficient is fast.
Strive for accurate shots by concentrating on sight
alignment, sight picture, and trigger control (surprise break).
Speed will come automatically with practice.
Accuracy will not come automatically with practice.
You have to concentrate and get the technique correct.
Perfect practice makes perfect.
Imperfect practice ingrains bad habits
which have to be broken and fixed.

When giving a class or helping with a class,
the main thing is safety.  Watch for fingers on
the triggers when they are not supposed to be and
say FINGER!  Watch for the guns not pointing in a
safe direction and say MUZZLE!  Watch for a student
forgetting to put on his ear muffs or ear plugs and
say EARS!  Similarly for eye protection, EYES!
Stay close to the student so that you can physically
push their arms to keep their gun pointed down range,
in case they panic.  A bee could sting them.  A piece of
hot brass may get caught between their eye and their
glasses.
Watch for students wrapping their support side thumb
behind the pistol and explain to them that when the
action cycles, the slide will cut or break their thumb.
So, they need to move their support side hand forward
to get their fingers wrapped around the front of the
grip, so they can pull with their support side hand.
If they have their support side thumb behind the pistol,
they probably only have their finger tips in front of
the grip.
Answer questions as best you can or refer the
student's questions to another instructor.
"I don't know.  Let's find out." is a perfectly good answer.

Jon

May I suggest to you that shooting, and general
competence with firearms, is as an essential survival
skill, like swimming?
It's not enough to know how to swim to save yourself.
You need to be a strong enough swimmer and a skilled
enough swimmer to save your children or others.
Similarly, it's not enough to be able to shoot the gun
accurately, you need the skills to avoid the gun fight
if possible; if not, you need the skills to get
to the scene alive, apply fire competently, rescue,
and retreat safely.  That takes a lot of training
and practice.
Just as with swimming, you may never need the
life saving skills in your life time.  But, failure
to have the skills in your repertoire is akin to
failure to buy life insurance.  The results are
devastating and will change the course of history
for your family.
We are alive today, because all of our ancestors
survived long enough to procreate.  Some by dumb luck
or God's grace.  But, we are intelligent enough to
proactively ensure our survival and our children's
survival.
So, our shooting is far more than a sport or hobby.

Notice the support side hand only technique.
This is clearly faster than turning the pistol around
to establish a high tight grip, but trigger control
with the little finger requires a great deal of practice.
We have always recommended reaching around behind your
back to to establish a high tight grip before pulling
the pistol from the holster.  But, if you have to
reach around the front, this may be a practical option.
Note that the NRA Instructor staff discourages teaching
the "reach behind your back" technique because they
fear the student may muzzle (or shoot) someone behind
the line.

Left handed technique for right handed pistols.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCNSKJGAHDo
We have always taught racking the slide with the
thumb pointed back, not forward.  This allows you
to keep the pistol closer to your chest.  Which gives
you more control and makes it harder for the enemy
to take the pistol from you.

The primary reason for carrying an extra magazine
is to fix stoppages, not because you fear running out
of ammunition.  We are not police.  We are not military.
The probability of being forced to engage in a prolonged
gun fight is infinitesimal.  Statistically speaking,
the gun fight last 2 seconds, one or two rounds are
fired from a distance of 5 feet; at which point one
side has fled or is incapacitated.  But, the probability
of a stoppage is high, due to contact with persons,
clothing, walls, etc.  If you fire from inside your
jacket pocket or inside your purse, the confined space
may prevent the brass from ejecting properly
(may prevent the brass from extracting properly).
That's why revolvers are so nice in confined spaces.

Greetings Concealed Weapons Permittees,
I just heard President Obama's speech at 11:00 today,
16 January 2013.
He intends to make it illegal for us
to sell guns to each other without government approval.
That means government knowledge of the transaction.
You know how easy it is to keep a database.
He intends to outlaw magazines that hold over ten
rounds.
He has asked the American People to speak out against
gun owners and against the 2nd Amendment lobby.
He intends to use psychiatrist against us.  Your
2nd Amendment rights will be taken away from you on the
word of a psychiatrist, not a court.  This is exactly
what the Soviets did.
He used the term "gun violence" many times.
There is no such thing as gun violence.  Guns are
inanimate objects.  They cannot commit violence.
Such terms are propaganda, not descriptive.
The purpose of gun control laws is to criminalize
the behavior of political opponents, so that the
government can arrest, imprison, fine, and disenfranchise
the political opposition.  We assume the responsibility
to protect ourselves, our families, and our community.
So, we keep and bear arms.  They shirk their
responsibility.  So, the don't keep and bear arms.  They
think that the government will protect them.  They have
effectively become wards of the state.

------------------------------
----------------------------------------
A couple of you asked me how to hide guns to avoid gun
confiscation by the government in direct violation of the
2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.  The following are my
suggestions.  If you have any, please let me know.

I think a gun hidden in your car would be hard to find since
your car is metallic.  Inside the door panels, perhaps?  The "trunk"
section of my hatch back Subaru has several compartments for the
various tools for changing a tire.  If you have such compartments,
you could probably hide a gun there.  It has to be accessible to
you, so there is no sense in hiding it somewhere that requires cutting,
welding, or that sort of thing.  If you have a tubeless spare tire,
you could hide a gun inside the tire and then inflate it.
A gun box epoxied or welded to the inside of the wheel well
might work (I know it works for keys).
A holster bolted to the firewall high up behind the
dashboard might work.  Actually, under a thick padded floor mat
might work. (you might have to cut out the shape of the gun
in the padding)
In the house, you could screw or glue a holster to the top
surface inside a drawer.  Put the gun in a zip lock bag and bury
the gun in the dirt of a planter, preferable a steel or brass pot.
In a heavy duty freezer zip lock plastic bag and buried in the
yard near a metal water or gas pipe would be good.  You need a land
mark to find it later, and metal pipes to camouflage the metal in
the gun from metal detectors.
If you're close to water, place the gun
in a waterproof case (put weights {ammunition} in the case to
ensure it sinks), tie a nylon (nylon sinks, polypropylene floats)
cord to the case, throw the case into the water and tie the
end of the cord to something on shore, and bury the cord as best
you can.
If you want to avoid the rope on shore and have a boat to
search to recover the payload, you could tie a buoy to the gun case
and tie it all to a cloth bag of salt, such that everything sinks.
When the salt dissolves, the buoy will float to the surface.
You have to adjust everything accordingly.  Rate of dissolution
depends on salinity of the water (Atlantic or Cooper River)
and temperature.  Or, if you're willing to spend the money,
there are devices that will burn through a steel cable on a
sonar signal to release your payload from a weight.  That's
how we set up our gravimeters, seismometers, and other
instruments when we instrumented Loihi, an underwater volcano
off the island of Hawaii.  We failed to recover about half of
our equipment.  And we had all the best recovery equipment aboard the
University of Hawaii research vessel, the Manoa Wave.
I think the drug smugglers have a higher recovery rate,
but they use different techniques.
Or, you could adjust a buoy to float at a given depth under
the surface, say 6 feet that you could reach with a pole.
You're going to need GPS or landmarks to recover this.
Or, you could buy a used or surplus Navy sonobuoy, put your
gun inside it and toss it overboard.  You can set it up to
sink to the ocean floor and surface when pinged with a particular
sonar signal.  I don't know how long the batteries last.
Or, you could attach a net with floats to your gun case,
so that the case sits on the sea bed.  Then you could recover
it by dragging an anchor to snag the net.  That's how the
phone companies pull undersea cables to the surface for servicing.
Renting a storage space in cash under a false name might
defeat a search warrant.
I have stored my guns in the armories of military bases,
even when I wasn't attached to a unit on that base.  They have
always refused to honor civilian search warrants.  The lockers
in the gun clubs on base, not so much.
Things that probably won't work against a search warrant:
You could hallow out a book, and hide it on your bookshelf.
Zip lock bag inside the toilet tank is easily accessible,
but if I were executing the search warrant, I'd definitely look
there.  I would also check ceiling paneling.
I've got one inside an external DVD/CD drive sitting on top
of my computer.  It's an Iomega Super DVD.  My full size model
1911 fits comfortable in it.  Easy enough to find an old one at any
Goodwill thrift store.  Open it up, rip the innards out, and you're
good to go.
Holsters bolted to the underside of tables, counters, and desks
won't work against cops and children.
I've hidden things in ceiling lighting fixtures with some
success.

Cheers,
Jon

Wife writing to her husband in prison:  John, I don't know how we're
going to plow the fields.  The tractor is broke we don't have money
to rent one.

Husband to wife:  Karen, don't go digging in the fields.  Just leave
it alone.  If any of the neighbors offers to help you plow the field,
just tell 'em no thank you.

A couple weeks later.

Wife:  John, the police came with a warrant and plowed the field.

Husband:  Best you get to planting.

12-Year-Old Girl Shoots Intruder During Home Invasion In Bryan County

Dry practice is for everyone, not just beginners.

In the defensive pistol class that we taught at the Palmetto Gun Club,
we practiced presenting the pistol from the holster with the support side
hand by reaching around your back.  The advantage to this technique is that
the shooter establishes a proper grip on the pistol before pulling the
pistol out of the holster.  I believe that this is a good technique and
should be taught.
But, here is the other side of the coin.  The NRA Instructor Staff
at NRA Headquarters did not put this technique in the NRA Defensive Pistol
course and never will, because they fear that the student will point the
gun at the people behind him.  The NRA Instructor Staff reminds us that
the level of competence of the students may be low.
It should also be noted that the Federal Law Enforcement Training
Centers do not teach this technique as part of their standard curriculum
(though some instructors teach it on their own).  Their preferred technique
is to reach around the front, pull the pistol far enough out of the holster
to turn it around so the grip points forward, and then to establish a
high tight grip with the support side hand.  (This may require pulling
the pistol completely out of the holster and then putting the pistol
back in the holster backwards.  Which sometimes causes the pistol to
get stuck in Serpa holsters.  That's why the U.S. Interior Department
has forbidden the use of Serpa holsters.)
So, if you're going to teach this technique, please consider practicing
it with guns unloaded.

Jon

Good guy protects his family in attempted car jacking.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_But23A9A0k&feature=related
Please note that the good guy sustained serious injuries.
The bad guy died at the scene.
But, the most important thing, the family did not get
kidnapped, raped, tortured, and murdered.  The most important
part of these stories is always left out.  Such is the nature
of propaganda and censorship.
Please note that the hole in the car door indicates
that the bullet traveled from inside to outside.  That's
why we recommend copper jacketed round nose bullets.  You
may have to penetrate a car door to stop the carjacker.
Hollow point bullets are not designed to penetrate windows
and doors.

Houston, TX police department video on how to react to
an active shooter situation,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VcSwejU2D0&feature=youtu.be
You might want to pass this along to others who have had
no training.  One of the significant things the video teaches
is "get out", even if others want to stay and hide.  The
shooter is active, moving, so he is going to find you.
If you don't get out, you're going to have to fight.
Which untrained persons aren't very good at.

You'll see persons at handgun matches doing things wrong,
as gripping the pistol with the support side thumb behind the
slide.  Please speak up and tell them.  Don't let them cut or
break their thumb and then laugh.  It is your duty to maintain
a safe range.  Assume the responsibility and speak up.
