CWP, 19 March 2016 Anno Domini

Greetings Sheepdogs,
The 2016 Tactical Conference in Memphis, TN
was outstanding.  At times there were 5 classes
going on at the same time during the 3 days.  The
three of us tried to go to different classes and
exchanged notes over dinner every night.  But
still, we missed most of the available information.
There were lecture classes, shooting classes,
hands on grappling, hands on disarming and
retention, etc.  It was mind boggling.
I enthusiastically recommend attending.  Sign up
early, as it sold out 4 months in advance this
year and will probably sell out 6 months in
advance next year.
http://rangemaster.com/
Words of wisdom from the Tactical Conference
are scattered below. (I would have had a lot more
if I could read my handwriting.)

In the U.S., 3.1% of us have a carry permit.
That's 12.5 million persons.  Unfortunately, only
a small fraction actually carry.

***** Mindset *****

Know the status of your weapon.  Know the law.
Store your weapons so unauthorized persons can't
get them.

     Indicators of malicious intent:
Movement toward you
Sudden appearance
Distraction (one guy talking to you to allow another
to sneak up behind you)
Any attempt to fix you in place (movement to block
your path)
Grooming mannerisms (for instance, rubbing the chin,
touching the face, these are pre-assault cues)
[There are more, but I can't read my handwriting.]

SWAT teams rarely shoot anyone.  They sit, wait, and talk.
Detectives rarely shoot anyone.

Armed robberies - 10% at home, 90% away from home.

When accosted, you will probably be accosted by
multiple assailants.  Because criminals work in gangs.
So, you should carry a full size high capacity pistol.

***** Training *****

How to judge the stuff your instructor is teaching
you:
Is it useful?  (or is the probability of having to
use it in combat near zero)
Is it simple?  (or is it complex and therefore
extremely difficult to turn into an automatic response)
Does it work in adverse conditions?  (because any
attack will create adverse conditions; physically and
mentally)
Is it proven?  (have cops or soldiers used it in
real world combat?)

Stopping the bad guys is important.  But, knowing
first aid to save the good guys may be more important.

When you last practiced is more important than
how much you last practiced. -- Tom Givens
In the neuroscience section, they stressed how
recency is crucially important.  You remember recent
motor operations much better than ones you last
practiced long ago (even if you practiced them a lot
long ago).

Always striving to do something new and different,
I did a one-on-one course with with a lady, Michelle.
She is an attorney from Denver, CO.  She flew in to
Nashville, TN on Saturday, 5 March 2016 and departed on
Monday, 14 March 2016.  During the week we did most of
the NRA Defensive Pistol course:  ~10 hours of lectures,
~10 hours of pistol manipulations, ~2 hours of simulators
(shoot / no-shoot judgment exercises; We took a coffee
break in the middle, as her hands were getting sore.),
~16 hours of live fire exercises.  We did not do the
tactical exercises (IDPA match) nor the force-on-force
exercises (Simunitions), because she had to work on a
case in Albuquerque, NM.  So, I dropped her off at an
internet cafe (Flat Rock Cafe on Nolensville Pike) on
one day and an IHOP on another day, and she did her
lawyer thing by email and phone.
In the early morning of Friday, 11 March 2016, we
drove to Memphis, TN to attend the Tactical Conference.
She did the classes:
Managing the "Don't Shoot" (how to handle a compliant
suspect)
Ladies Only Range Session (live fire)
Low Light Equipment
Escaping Common Restraints
Tactical Folding Knife
Defining the Threat
Common Training & Safety Errors
Lessons from Recent Trials (heavy legal stuff)
Building Highly Successful Gunfighters (live fire)
     2016 Tactical Conference Schedule -
http://rangemaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/TacConf2016_Schedule_Full.pdf
Before she left on Monday, 14 March 2016, we
attempted to do the Tactical Knife class by the Police
Officer's Safety Association, but again ran out of time.
She called me from Denver to tell me that she
enjoyed the experience, was exhausted, and that all of
her muscles were sore.  So, she went to get a massage.

     Why is training so important?
In the U.S., twice a week someone gets shot who didn't
need to.  Everyday, a person shoots himself.
-- Claude Werner
[This may seem strange.  It's a probability thing.
The probability that a given person will shot himself
is very low.  But, the probability that anyone in a
population of 323 million will shoot himself is very
high.]

Learn to read the sights.  That is to say, watch
the sights move through your follow through.  Keep your
aiming eye open to watch the sights.  If you don't see
the muzzle flash, you closed your eye.  This is a
common problem.  Be aware of it.  Even on a bright
sunny day, you will see the orange muzzle flash if you
aiming eye is open.

     Dry practice -
Only when alert and focused.
Unload in another area.
Chamber check your pistol.
Magazine check your pistol.
Practice your holster operations.
Use a dedicated target and remove it when you're done.
Make sure you have a backstop that will catch your
negligent discharge.
Don't tolerate any disturbances.  Don't let anything
distract you.
When you're finished with dry practice -
Do something before loading.  Like saying out loud,
"I AM LOADED!"  Or, leave the house.
To protect your .22 caliber pistol, use a
drywall anchor screw as a dummy round.

Dry practice to read the sights.  You can't learn
to read the sights with the distraction of the recoil
and report of the pistol.
Call your shots.  With practice you will know
where your shot went even if you can't see the bullet
hole on the target.  This is an essential skill.

Dry practice 2 to 4 hours after exercising for
best effect.

Your dry practice to live fire ratio should be
about 10 to 1.

Practice your rapid target analysis in Wal Mart.
Look at the person and size him up.  If Jason Borne
can do it, you can do it.  It just takes practice.
Yes, you are profiling.  Yes, it is politically
incorrect.  We are concerned with truth, not political
correctness.  Political correctness kills.

Why is keeping your trigger finger in the
register position so important?
The industry standard for self-defense / combat
pistols is a 6 to 7 pound trigger.
The startle response of a human will generate
30 pounds of pressure in the grip of the hands.
Postural disturbances will cause the human to
grip tightly.
     Interlimb interaction (sympathetic action) will
cause the firing side hand, including the trigger finger,
to contract when the support side hand contracts.

***** Tactics *****

There was a lot of talk at the conference about
kicking down doors.  I don't know if they were talking
metaphorically and actually were using a battering ram
or a Halligan, but I've never had the good fortune of
finding a cheap weak door that opened in, that I could
kick in.  So, I teach my students to find another way
if the door is locked.  Once, you kick it (whether it
opens or not) everyone knows you're there, and the
shooting starts.  There's a low probability of breaking
through the doorway.  There's a high probability of
injuring yourself.

***** Techniques *****

Based on what I learned at the Tactical
Conference, I have deleted the Harries flashlight
technique from my lesson plans for my NRA Defensive
Pistol course and replaced it with a head index
(cheek index, neck index, etc.)
technique.  Because you don't want to be pointing
your pistol at what you're searching.  That violates
our safety rule.
Actually, I've changed a lot of things in my
lesson plans.  I was teaching a lot of obsolete
stuff.  Send me an email requesting a copy of the
latest version of my lesson plan.

***** Gear *****

Our friend, Matt Sarsfield, opened his Cerakote
firearms coating business about a year ago.  Contact
him at mesarsfield@gmail.com to get a copy of his FFL.
Have your FFL transfer your firearm to him for a top
notch Cerakote job.

If you're going to keep a gun at home for
self-defense, make sure you keep a flashlight next
to it.  Just as your pistol is loaded with factory
new ammo for reliability, so your flashlight should
have fresh batteries in it.

***** Instructors *****

---===***** Super Important *****===---
Teach your students what to do in the aftermath
of a shooting.  You have a responsibility to teach
this.  If you don't know, take a class and find out.
Captain Massad Ayoob gave a lecture in which he
compared two almost identical self-defense shootings.
In the first, the lady immediately called 911 to
report the self-defense shooting.  In the second the
lady left the scene, but returned later to call 911.
In the first the lady did not speak to police.
In the second, the lady made statements that later
conflicted with her statements at the trial.
The first lady spent 54 months in jail because she
didn't have the money for the bail, but was eventually
acquitted.  The second lady is serving a 50 year to
life sentence.
The facts of the shooting were not in question.
Only the actions after the shooting determined the
outcome.
When questioned after the trail, the jury of the
second lady said they didn't believer her because of
the conflicting statements and her fleeing the scene.
The first lady didn't have any conflicting statements
because she didn't make any statements at the scene
of the shooting.
Stress will cause loss of memory and false
memories.  Most police departments have a policy of
not taking the police officers statement until he's
had a good night's sleep, some won't take a statement
for 72 hours.  In just about every statement taken
at the scene immediately after the shooting (that
I've read), the officer gets the number of rounds
that he fired wrong.  That's the effect of stress.
---===***** Super Important *****===---

"The super motivated, fit, really switched-on people
don't need you.  The 60 year-old women with tiny fingers
and small hands and arthritis and no grip strength need
you." -- Karl Rehn (paraphrased)
I used to teach at Front Sight.  The students were
rich and highly motivated.  For them, it was a great way
to spend a vacation.  Fun and games!
Now days, I teach in small town churches and
community centers.  My students would rather be somewhere
else, but they have a desperate need.  They have seen
the Jihadists doing recon on their churches.  They have
been mugged, or know of immediate family who have.
To them, this self-defense stuff is life and death.

Don't use terminology that confuses your students,
such as loading and unloading your magazines.
We load and unload our pistols.  We charge and void our
magazines.

We teach careful gun handling, as opposed to safe
gun handling.  Safe implies no risk.  When handling guns
there is always inherent risk.

Teaching real world defensive pistol techniques
requires a hot range.  We are not teaching a sport.
A cold range teaches the wrong mindset and wrong
protocols.
Safe range?  No, we are running a victorious range.
We are advancing the art, saving lives, giving people
victory. -- John Farnam (paraphrased)

The student's goal should be 80% hits in the
high thorasic cavity or cranio-occular cavity.
Higher than 80% means they are going too slow.
Lower than 80% means they are going too fast.
This is the Goldilocks zone.
In practice, you have to push your envelope to
find your 80%, so that in combat you will know your
limits and behave accordingly.

"A man's got to know his limits."
-- Dirty Harry in Magnum Force

Don't allow your students to holster without
a command to do so.  It's just a bad habit.
In combat, you won't know that the threat has ended.
So, you shouldn't holster.  Unless you have to do
something else that requires both hands.

Never tell your students how to do things.  Just
tell them what needs to be done.  Stay in role.

Give a GO! command.  No, ready, set, etc.
If possible, give a visual command to initiate the
exercise.  Because in combat, a visual cue will
initiate your action.

No gun handling in the student's car.  Either
leave the range with a loaded gun in the holster or
with an unloaded gun in a box.

Having the students keep their trigger finger in
the register position reduces the probability of a
negligent discharge.
The C finger register position is incompatible
with the SERPA holsters.  Because it leads to negligent
discharges as the trigger finger continues the motion
to defeat the holster retention device and hits the
trigger.

The primary cause of negligent discharges is
unnecessary gun handling.  Simply say, "We're not
handling guns here."

Make sure your students wear eye protection.
An instructor told us of an officer who after the shooting
was finished removed his glasses.  Another officer pulled
the bolt of his Kalashnikov rifle to eject a live round
(with sharp pointy bullet).  The round flew two points
down and hit the other officer in the eye.  He lost his
eye.  Keep your glasses on!  The glasses should be wrap
around or have side protection.  [Kalashnikov rifles
are designed to throw the spent brass far away from the
shooter, so as to prevent a pile of shiny brass next
to the shooter.  You will also notice that Russian made
cartridges have dull colored cases, not shiny.  Because
the Russian engineers actually listen to the soldiers.]
Make sure your students wear high neck shirts.
An instructor told us of a training session at a nuclear
facility where a piece of hot brass went down the front
of an person's shirt, burned the person, and startled the
person.  Resulting in the person shooting the person's
foot.  The foot had to be amputated.
So, when someone says, "After the first time it
happens, she will learn, and she won't let it happen
again."  WRONG!  You can't let it happen the first time.
Make sure your students wear hats with long wide
brims to prevent hot brass from getting caught between
their eye and their glasses.  I will spare you the
horror story.

Teach your students to drop fumbled guns.
Never try to catch a fumbled gun!  Murphy's law says
it will fire and hit something you don't want to.

Teach your students to finish the drill.
If something goes wrong, fix it.  Reload and clear
malfunctions as necessary, and finish the drill.

“Understanding and Training the Female Shooter”
http://www.activeresponsetraining.net/understanding-and-training-the-female-shooter

     Trigger control is self-control.
Touch the trigger.  Take the slack out of the trigger.
Smoothly press without intentionally firing the shot
to achieve a surprise break.
Trap the trigger to the rear and hold it there as you
watch the sights move during the recoil and return to
the target.  Only then, do you reset the trigger.
If you do this, you will never be going back to a
target you missed, which is a huge waste of time.
Rather, you will always be moving forward to the next
target, which is an efficient way to win.

"Who Dares, Wins"
-- motto of the Special Air Service

The Tactical Conference had a whole section on
neuroscience.
How many repetitions does it take to ...
It depends.  It's genetic.  It's motivational. ...
     Anyway,
300 to 500 repetitions to place a simple motor operation
into implicit memory (muscle memory, but muscles have
no memory, only the brain has memory).
3000 to 5000 repetitions to break a bad habit.
300 repetitions to develop the motor response.
Variable number of repetitions to maintain that motor
response.  3000 repetitions to automate the motor
response (unconsciously competent).

An Interesting Experience at the Shooting Range…
Written by Greg Ellifritz

---

We train for low probability events because
they have dire consequences.  And because the
training is fun in that it forces us to think.
And because we get to meet fascinating people.

---

In a recent simulator class, I had a student who
waited until the knife wielding assailant moved around
a barrier and around the bed before shooting the
assailant.  When I explained that the assailant
presented a lethal threat and should have been shot
immediately, the student responded by saying that he
had been in multiple knife fights before and wasn't
scared of a knife wielding assailant.
1.  In combat, you don't know what will happen in the
next fraction of a second.  Someone may attack you
from behind.  So, you need to stop threats immediately.
So, you can respond to the next threat.
2.  The student's experience was extremely biased, in
that the former assailants were untrained street punks.
So, they were not skilled and their level of dedication
to the attack was not high.  I assured him that if he
had survived attacks from trained dedicated assailants,
his opinion would be to shoot immediately upon
determination of a lethal threat.

In a recent live fire class, a student's pistol
(Ruger P-91, semi-auto double action with ambidextrous
decocker, .40 caliber; I could not find the pistol
on Ruger's web site.  So, I think it may be out of
production.  Production 1985 to 2013.) jammed with
the slide to the rear.  We could not release the
slide with the simple tools at hand.
Earlier in the course, during the cleaning
class, the student had had difficulty field stripping
and assembling the pistol.
My opinion is that if the pistol is not easily
field stripped and assembled, it's too complicated
to be a combat weapon.  You must be able to field
strip, clean, assemble, and function test the pistol
when you are tired (brain is struggling to focus),
cold (hands are numb), and in the dark under stress
(because the enemy is out and about).
A gunsmith determined that the pistol was
assembled (by the user) incorrectly.  That caused
the pistol to jam.  In my opinion, any pistol that
can be assembled incorrectly has a fatal design
flaw.

I heard a program on the radio on the way to
work this morning, 2/16/16.  The speaker was saying how
gun schools and churches are similar in that some are
concerned with growing to maximize their profit and
so resort to entertainment as opposed to education.
Some are concerned with education and so teach
breaking bad habits to replace them with good habits,
study (research), practice (homework), and a lot of
thinking in general, things which most people don't
want to do.  So, such schools or churches don't grow
very big.
I've been to the big gun schools, some have
massive internet audiences.  But, looking at my notes
from the past decades, I see that I've learned the
most from small classes (often, I was the only student
who showed up for the class) with NRA instructors and
non-NRA instructors teaching in their homes or small
facilities, because they loved helping others.

Most cops will never do that. Consequently, most cops

"Fear Is Your Friend" by Dave Spaulding
[Sorry, I don't know where the original article
was published.  I received a copy by email.]
http://www.handguncombatives.com/
Excerpts:
Autogenic breathing, what's also called "combat"
or "rescue" breathing, is the primary method to keep
you from becoming overwhelmed by fear. By breathing
in for a count of four, holding for four, letting
out for four and then holding again for four, the
heart rate can be lowered substantially in 10
repetitions or so. When you lower your heart rate,
you'll have a more rational mode of thought. I've
used this technique for everything — from a
promotion interview to being shot at — and
it works.
Knowing the physiological effects of combat
stress and fear (pounding heart, muscle tension,
trembling, rapid breathing, nausea, "gut knot,"
dry mouth, tunnel vision, etc.) and understanding
they're naturally occurring phenomena will make
you better prepared.
Developing the skills needed to meet the
threat and knowing that these skills have worked
in combat, will add confidence and help you manage
fear. Also, once you truly understand the
pandemonium that conflict entails (not what's
portrayed in Hollywood films), you'll be less
willing to enter it — and that's not a bad thing.
Bottom line: Once you understand fear, you can
use it to your advantage.

when they meet you, they beat you. Train hard and
stay on guard." -- Dennis Martin

Follow up to the article directly above.
If you believe the logic that guns don't murder people,
people murder people, guns are inanimate objects;
then if follows that guns don't make people safe,
people make people safe.
Of course, the truth is that only the sheepdogs
make the sheep safe.  Sheep who flee at the onset of
violence don't make the sheep safe.  Wolves who prey
on the sheep don't make the sheep safe.
During the American Revolution about 10% of the
population took up arms and fought.  Today, less than
1% of the population volunteers to join the Armed
Forces.  Of those, about 10% shoot anything.  (Except
in the Marine Corps where everyone is supposed to be
a rifleman, ya sort of.)  So we, sheepdogs, really
are the 1 percenters.

Operativo “Cisne negro”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPhFWHJsgkc
Watch the helmet cam footage of the raid that
resulted in the capture of the Mexican Cartel drug
lord known as “El Chapo.”  The soldiers ended up
killing five of El Chapo’s bodyguards and wounding
several more.  Watch the tactics.  These guys are
fairly well trained.  The raid got chaotic at times,
but they did a pretty good job clearing a very
difficult structure.  Only one of the Marines was
wounded in the 15 minute gunfight.
Note how they use barricades and cover in the
running gunfight.  Note how they fight from the
hallways and make limited penetration into the
rooms.  Note how slowly they go.  If your SWAT team
is busting in to every target as fast as possible
and “running the walls” of every room, your tactics
are out of date.  Slow down.  Have good command and
control.  Cover every uncleared area.  Then clear
the structure room by room, doing the majority of
your work from outside in the hallway before you
physically enter the room. -- Active Response Training

SSgt.,
I read the little section about the Glock mag
baseplates and I too struggled with em until I
discovered a secret about the mags. There is a
plate on the base of the spring. That's what
you're pushing in through that little hole in the
bottom. This plate is near the same dimension as
the inside of the mag body. If you push that in
just a fraction of an inch, it's still in the area
that you'll apply the clamp. Using a small
Phillips screwdriver, I push that plate in as deep
as I can. Then you can use your fingers to squeeze
the mag body or (as I prefer) use a pair of pliers
to squeeze. Once squeezed, hold firmly  and remove
the screwdriver. The plate will come down a little
but stop above where you're pliers are squeezing
the mag body. Then easily slide the base plate off.
Hope this helps you and if you could spread the
word, maybe it'll help many others!

Jon,
As always, thanks for putting this together.
A comment on the “Prescription Shooting
Glasses” notes.  As a lifelong wearer of prescription
glasses, and of course with multiple focal fields for
the last 30 years I have an acute sense of the
problem of clearly seeing the front sight.  And I can
tell that looking at this from 70+ years the issue
only gets worse as time passes.  So I offer this:
For use in handgun use in hunting, competition,
and generally on the range, having these special
shooting glasses is an excellent method to be able to
continually “dig out the front sight” and make your
hits.
BUT – I’d suggest that for defensive handgun use
one should also train to use whatever vision you have
when you are walking on the street.  There will be no
opportunity to say: “Wait a moment mister bad guy,
let me put my specially adapted shooting glasses on
first”.  You must go with what you’ve got.  And so
some drills with “what you’ve got” are also in order.
Other solutions to mitigate the problem (of older
age vision) might be
(a) get an oversized and/or very bright front sight or
(b) get a red dot sight mounted on your pistol.
I’m sure there are other successful solutions as well,
but these two work for me.  My smaller guns (when I
carry them) have a bright luminescent light tube for
the front sight, the larger ones on which I can mount
a Trijicon RMR Red dot (which I usually carry) have
that.
One could write a whole book on this issue,
I just want to make the point that one also needs
to train with what you’ve got for defensive shooting
scenarios.

     Notes from the Sheepdog Seminar
http://sheepdogseminars.com/
on protecting your church, school, etc.
We are at war.  The terrorists are here in our
country.  They are preparing and training.
-
What every speaker said, "Train, train, train!"
If you carry a gun without training, you are worse than
useless, you are dangerous.  If you apply a tourniquet,
without knowing what you're doing, the victim could bleed
to death or you could cause an unnecessary amputation.
Your church safety team should have medical personel,
technical (the persons who are physically in the building
on a regular basis, custodial, janitorial, and maintenance
personel), and protection (the trained and armed personel).
If there is any chance that you can't identify the
friendlies, use banners.  You keep them in a pouch on
your belt and pull them out and drape them over your torso
(as in the Miss America pagent where the banner
says "Miss Tennessee").
Do a risk survey.  You can't analyze or plan without
the facts.
     Lock the doors.
     Keep it simple.
Know what the insurance policy says.
Network with other churches and law enforcement.
Train and drill.  Reacting to an emergency with well
trained personel is like playing Jazz music.  Everyone
is not reading off the same sheet of music, as this would
be unrealistic, because you cannot predict the situation.
Everyone is ad libbing.
Train your women, because they are primary targets
of rape and other crimes.  For those who don't want to
carry a gun, hold classes on pepper spray.
The Department of Homeland Security says that
terrorist groups monitor church web sites.  This statement
is not classified and was cleared for release at the
seminar.
Don't expect to be understood.  The limp dick liberals
will mock you, and demand that the church be a gun free
zone.  Be strong and fight because you are right.  All
mass murders occur in gun free zones.
Keep a rifle in your car.  Terrorists will have
body armor and helments.  So, you need something that
can penetrate.  Shotguns are suboptimal, because you can
carry an ammo can of 1000 rifle rounds, but you need a
wheelbarrow to carry 1000 shotgun rounds.
Keep smoke grenades in your car.
Of course, you have to practice with these tools to
be able to use them effectively.  You will win if you
are prepared.  Practice your tactical shooting.  Practice
your martial arts.
"A golf course is a willful misuse of a rifle range."
-- Col. Dave Grossman
You will not panic or flee, because love quenches fear.
-
A group of us from my church went to the Sheepdog Seminar
in Chattanooga yesterday (Saturday, 1/30/16).
http://www.sheepdogsafetytraining.com/
We learned a lot.
All mass murderers in recent American history have one
thing in common.  They watch violent movies repeatedly
and to excess (for instance watching "Natural Born Killers"
50 times, which would not have been physically possible
in earlier times) and play violent video games (e.g. Grand
Theft Auto, et al) repeatedly and to excess.  This caused a
Pavlovian conditioning.  They associated violence with
good feelings and getting rewards.
The Hollywood activist who claim that violent movies and
games do not cause violence in our society are lying to you.
Please avoid violent video games and movies.  Please
prevent your children from watching violent movies and
playing violent video games.
-
Run, Hide, Fight
If anyone attacks your school, church, etc., RUN!
People who hide get killed, when the bad guys find them.
You can't be killed if you aren't there.  [This is the tactically
and statistically correct thing to do.  No matter what anyone
else says.  Remember, public school teachers, public school
principals, firemen, and policemen all work for the government,
so their priority is to protect the government from liability.
Why else would gun free zones exist?  Gun free zones create
unarmed victims for armed criminals to prey upon.  All mass
murders occur in gun free zones.]
If you are trapped and cannot run, lock the door and
barricade all paths to your HIDE.
If the enemy finds you, FIGHT!
Gouge eyes.  This will give you time to escape.
Stomp on feet in close to the shin, not on the toes.  The small
bones of the foot are easily broken.  The enemy likely has steel
toed boots or combat boots, and stomping on the toes is
generally not effective.  This will give you time to escape.
BITE!  Anywhere, but especially on the sides of the neck
to tear the carotid arteries.  Use the teeth in the front of your
mouth, not your molars.  The intent is to tear the flesh,
not to masticate.  This will give you time to escape.
May you never have occasion to Run, Hide, Fight.
But if you do, remember, your loved ones are depending on you.

The couriers told the LEO's that they were carrying

In response to several recent news articles --
Never fire warning shots.  This is an act of
stupidity.  In the real world, there is no safe
direction to fire a warning shot.  There is no legally
justifiable reason to fire a warning shot.  (If you

Never fire at fleeing vehicles.  This is an act
of stupidity, because you don't know who else is in

trunk of the vehicle that you could not have seen).
Never fire at fleeing persons.  This would be
an act of murder.  [Yes, there are jurisdictions that
allow law enforcement officers to fire at fleeing
felons to protect the public.  I know, because I applied
for a job at a maximum security prison in South Carolina.
But, if you're not a corrections officer in that

Hacks on my Glock 41

(Yes, I'm sure these hacks void the warranty.)
Even with the C clamp vice grips,
http://www.irwin.com/tools/locking-tools/the-original-locking-c-clamps-with-swivel-pads
I still found it very difficult to get the base
plates off of my magazines.  So, I just cut the
little tabs off the magazine bodies,
which is easy to do with a sharp knife.
Now, the base plates slide on and off easily.
We teach the modern theory of defensive
pistol craft that Col. Jeff Cooper formalize and
codified.  In this system, one pulls on the
magazine, after banging it into the magazine well,
to ensure it is locked in place.  You generally
can't do that with Glocks because there is no
forward facing lip to get your fingers on to pull.
So, I took a knife and cut away the bottom
of the forward facing edge of my magazine well.
Now, I can get my fingers on the forward lip of
the magazine to pull it out.  Or, know that it's
locked in place.
The plastic frame of the Glock is easy to
whittle with a sharp knife.  A set of steel
files and some patience will clean things up
nicely.  I have found that the plastic is so
soft that finishing work can be done with one's
finger nails.
I had to file off the sharp edges on the
front of my rear sight to avoid cutting my
hand when racking the slide.
I had to cut grooves into the sides of
my slide near the muzzle to allow sufficient
grip to perform a chamber check.
And after all of this work and firing the
pistol at a USPSA match, I have found that
when firing with one hand, I cannot control
the recoil.  The girth of the grip is just too
large.
The trigger is such that the user cannot
distinguish between slack and sear engagement.
There is no hard stop after taking up the
slack, and before the sear starts moving.
So, if you know anyone with large hands
and long fingers, who likes this sort of
trigger, let me know.  Otherwise, I'm donating
it to the Wilson County Friends of the NRA banquet.

"Don't move." is two syllables.  "Stop." is one syllable.
We were always taught to say "Stop!" or "Halt!"
"Don't move!" is a negative statement.
"Stop!" is a positive statement.  It takes much less
analysis on the part of the criminal to process a positive
statement.  Much less chance of a misunderstanding.
The assailant might have heard you say, "Move!", when you
actually said, "Don't move!".  Or, maybe you thought you
said, "Don't move!", but actually said, "Move!".
You think that's crazy?  It's not.  It's reality.  And
then there is what shows up on the witness' cell phone
camera, which will probably be entirely different from
what you remember.
You think I'm joking.  But, I'm not.
That's why police departments have policies of immediately
removing the officer involved in the shooting from the
scene and not interviewing him until after he's had a
good night's sleep.  You should do the same.

***** Instructors *****

When teaching a student, if the student does not
do what you are teaching, don't repeat what you just
said.  This is irritating for everyone.  The student
obviously did not understand you the first time.
There is no reason to believe that he will understand
you any better when you repeat the same verbiage.
As William Zinsser says in "On Writing Well", assume
your audience is intelligent; ignorant, but intelligent.
You, the instructor, are not communicating.  Assume
responsibility for this lack of communication and
change tack (An approach to accomplishing a goal
or a method of dealing with a problem.  4th definition
in the American Heritage Dictionary.).
Suggestions:
Mirror -- stand facing the student and execute the
mirror image of the action.  So, he can see what to
do as if looking in a mirror.
Verbiage -- use detailed explicit verbiage to explain
the technique, avoiding all acronyms and jargon.
This is actually quite difficult, because we assume
a cultural background that the student does not have.
Revert -- rather than explaining the technique,
explain what we are trying to accomplish.  The
student will often see a path to the goal and
execute an alternate technique or may execute the
intended technique.  Either way he wins.  If his technique
is unsafe, explain why.  Gently coax him to the correct
technique.

Disassembling Glock magazines

I viewed a lot of videos to find this one.  Use of this
particular type of vice grip makes a big difference.
A lot of armorers say you can disassemble with your hands
and a punch.  But, I have found that to be false.

Are Los Angeles County Sheriff M&P Pistols Unsafe?
http://www.bluesheepdog.com/2015/12/21/la-sheriff-report-sw-mp-pistols-are-unsafe/
Excerpts:

"The pistol light ND (negligent discharge) not involving
the grip activation involved a deputy directing traffic
with his pistol light instead of his flashlight. You
can’t make these things up, there really are buffoons
wearing badges who do these things!"

"Teaching a full lights-on method is just asking deputies
to abuse the pistol light for a flashlight."

"How such a large and progressive department could
believe that a video would be sufficient in training
on weapon lights, a difficult technical skill, is
beyond reason. "

Review (sort of) of the Glock 41 Gen4, .45 Auto.
https://us.glock.com/products/model/g41gen4
I bought a new in the box Glock 41.  I cleaned it and
dry fired it and did some reloading and malfunction
clearing drills with it.  The manual says you must
clean it before firing it for the first time.
It has a cheap plastic adjustable rear sight.
I will have to replace it.  It jiggles. I already
had to take a file and smooth off the sharp edges
on the front of the rear sight, so I could rack the
slide without cutting my hand.
The trigger does not have a hard stop between slack
and sear engagement.  This is apparently intentional,
as there is a school of thought in the self-defense
industry that advocates a smooth pull from trigger
reset to firing, rather than staging the trigger by
taking out the slack first and then pressing to
release the shot.  I think that being able to take out
the slack first and then pressing to release the shot
is better.  But, the trigger on this Glock 41 is
reliable and consistent.
I have always advocated simple black sights,
rectangular post front sight and rectangular notch
rear sight.  Because in the dark with a flashlight
you won't see any paint on your sights.  You will
only see the silhouette of the sights.  So, this
is the sighting system you should always be using,
because the painted markings will give you a
different point of impact.
But, I've changed my mind since using the
Glock sights on various colored backgrounds in daylight
conditions.  On a bright white background the black
outline of the sights shows up, while the white
painted parts disappear.  On a dark black background,
the black parts of the sight disappear, but the
white painted parts show up clearly.  So, high
contrast sights are effective in daylight conditions.
(That's why graphic artist write their lettering
with contrasting shadow when the text runs across
different background colors.  This ensures the
lettering will be visible.)
The rear sight has the white paint
going all the way to the top of the rear sight.
Unfortunately, the front sight has a white disk
inside the black rectangular front sight.  So, the
shooter cannot level the top of the front sight
with the top of the rear sight when using the white
painted areas.  I will have to paint the front sight
to get the white area to go up to the top of the
front sight.
I will have to machine some grooves into the
sides of the slide to allow me to do a chamber
check.  (I'm sure this will void the warranty.
But, the finish on the slide is just too smooth
and slick.)  I have tried gluing on rough material,
as used on the floor of bathtubs or steps.  But, I
haven't found anything that will stick to the modern
Glock finish.
Glock's literature lists the Glock 41 as a
competition pistol, as opposed to a tactical pistol.
The action is tight.  It does not rattle when you
shake it.  Which is good for accuracy, but bad for
reliability, as sand and grit can jam a tight slide.
The grip is big, without any of the back straps.
Attaching one of the 4 included back straps would
make the grip even bigger.  This pistol is designed
for people with very large hands and long fingers.
The Springfield Armory XD in .45 ACP has a smaller
grip, for the same 13 round magazine capacity.  That
extra layer of plastic over the steel magazine adds
significant girth to the grip size.
The magazine release may be reversed for left
handers.  So, it is left or right handed, but it is
not ambidextrous.
The literature says that the barrel has a right
hand twist octagonal bore.  But, my barrel has
lands and grooves rifling.  (Yes, I have seen the
octagonal bores, so I know the difference.)
I was impressed by the mirror finish of the bore.
It makes cleaning the bore very easy.
