"True Drowning Story: Why Mental Preparedness is Everything"

Excerpt:
Remember, it is not what you have in your prepared
supplies that will cause you to survive anything.
It is what you know. What you have can just make
your survival easier. If you do not have the
proper knowledge, training, and ability, do not
use your emotions to make a victim of yourself as
well.

Parents Talking to Their Kids About Gun Safety
- NSSF & Project ChildSafe
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M86QxNZF3AE#t=28
Wow, this is just like talking to your
kids about sex or driving.
"I know a lot about guns from video games."
Whoa, this statement is so false, on so many levels.
If you don't talk to your kids about guns,
they will learn about guns by watching TV and
movies. If you take them to a gun school,
they will be irritated by everything they see
on TV and in the movies. They'll be pointing
out all the mistakes, as you try to watch the show.
That's a good sign. They are separating reality
from fiction. Something uneducated people can't do.

Mr. Farnam's friend talks about the Philippines.
But, I have seen the same in Turkey and the Kingdom
of Saudi Arabia.
In Turkey, movie theater seating is reserved.
So, enemies are not seated next to each other.
In the Ankara airport, I saw lines of Turkish
soldiers armed with submachineguns standing between
groups of Jews and Arabs.
But, that was over a decade ago. I'm sure
things have gotten better.

“Like parachutes and fire-extinguishers,
guns are emergency/safety equipment.
When you require one, your need will be
immediate, critical, and desperate. And,
when unprepared, you’ll likely never
need one again!” -- Anonymous
When I was a child, my paternal grandmother
and I were arguing about defensive driving. I
had learned in school that you can always avoid
a collision (I am in control attitude).
My grandmother told me that sometimes you can't
do anything to defend yourself when driving
(I am a victim attitude). She cited an example:
You're stopped at an intersection and a driver
(not a car, a car is an inanimate object)
drives up behind you and rams you from the rear.
There is nothing you can do about that.
I believed that, until I took a course from
Front Sight, where Brad Ackman told us about his
mother who was stopped at an intersection. She
was checking her rear view mirror and saw a car
barreling down on her. So, she pulled off the
road, onto the shoulder of the road, to get out
of the way. (She had intentionally left enough
space between her car and the car in front of
her to make this maneuver.) Unfortunately, the
bad driver plowed into the car that was in front
of her, pushing it into the intersection, causing
a collision with crossing traffic. But, Brad's
mother avoided injury.
You don't have to be a victim. You can
always avoid the incident, if you pay attention
to what's going on around you. This is truth.
But, more importantly, it is attitude.

Claude Werner says a lot of untrained people
successfully defend themselves with guns everyday.
So, why spend the time and money to train?
My answer is that training is not just to allow
you to win the fight. Training is to allow you
to avoid the fight.
In golf, the more you train, the fewer
strokes you are forced to play on the course.
So, as with self-defense, the more you train,
the fewer shots you will be forced to fire in
combat.
Good training should teach you principles
that allow you to avoid complacency and stay in
condition yellow. Good training should teach
you life survival skills, not just gun skills.
Good training should be teaching you how
to end the fight with your first shot, even if
good judgement forces you to continue firing.
(Good training would allow you to explain the
preceding sentence.)

"Self-Reliant?"
Posted by John S. Farnam on 4 Mar 2015

Excerpt: Froze to death while waiting for help from 911.
What's the most important attribute of self-defense?
Mental alertness.
What's the most important attribute of survival?
Physical fitness.
What's the most important attribute of avoiding injury?
Attitude.
In the Marine Corps, we were trained to high crawl
(crawl on our hands and knees) and low crawl (on our
belly, side of the head scraping along the ground, using
elbows, feet, and knees to push ourselves forward)
to avoid getting injured or killed. In a recent
conversation with a lady, who had slipped on
the ice and broken her hip, requiring total joint
replacement surgery and many months of rehab,
I suggested that in the future she should crawl over
the ice. I told her that I had negotiated treacherous
ice safely many times by crawling. She told me that
she was a lady and that crawling would be
undignified. So, she would never do such a thing.
***** Training *****
Slow is smooth. Smooth is efficient. Efficient is fast.
Speed will come automatically with practice.
Accuracy will not automatically improve with practice.
You must force yourself to keep your aiming eye open
through the shot process and follow through. So, that
you can watch where the front sight is going during the
follow through, while you have the trigger trapped to
the rear. And bring the sights back onto the target,
before resetting the trigger. Watching your follow through
allows you to control your follow through, which is essential.
You must focus on the front sight. Sharp clear focus,
see the serrations on the front sight. Visual focus equals
mental concentration. If you are not focused on the front
sight, you are focused on the target. Which means you are
concentrating on the target. In such a case, your front
sight will wander off and you'll never notice it.
You must get a surprise break to defeat your autonomic
nervous system. Otherwise, you will anticipate the recoil
and push the shot low left for right handers, low right for
left handers. Do not fire the shot. Hold the sights on
the target and smoothly increase pressure on the trigger.
The pistol will fire. You don't have to make it fire.
If you intentionally fire the pistol, you've got a good
chance of missing. If you let the pistol fire, without
forcing the shot, you will be able to place the bullet
where you want it on demand every time. In particular,
on the first shot. Which is the most important, because
if you can end the fight with your first shot, you minimize
your injuries. Yes, this is counter intuitive. Yes,
this takes a great deal of practice to engrain in your
brain.
Perfect practice makes perfect. Imperfect practice
engrains bad habits that must be broken and fixed.
Improve Your Trigger Pull with These 6 Tips

I have had many many students take offense when I tell
them that they missed because they were not aiming. They
assure me that they were aiming. I'm standing behind them
when they are shooting and I can see their pistol far below
their line of sight (the line from their eye to the target).
It is natural to focus and concentrate on the target in a
high stress situation. So, it is easy to neglect to aim.
Shooting well under stress is not easy. It is not
natural. We are not born with guns in our hands.
The natural reaction to loud noises (report) and sharp
jerking motions (recoil) is to tense up our muscles and
shut our eyes. It will take a great deal of training
to defeat this innate instinctive response to report and
recoil. But, we must in order to shoot well.

incident was in Brazil executed by a law enforcement

Closing the distance to the bad guy in
the store was correct to avoid shooting the store
clerk and to increase the probability of a hit.
Shooting the accomplice (on the motorcycle) was
correct to prevent the escape of a violent felon
(the driver was guilty of murder, because his
accomplice killed the customer in the store as
witnessed by the plain clothes police officer
[under Brazilian law].)
Shooting the fleeing suspect was correct
to prevent the escape of a violent felon (the

That is to say, the air sticks to the surface of the bullet
and moves faster relative to the bullet, the further away
from the bullet the air gets.

incident was in Brazil executed by a law enforcement

Closing the distance to the bad guy in
the store was correct to avoid shooting the store
clerk and to increase the probability of a hit.
Shooting the accomplice (on the motorcycle) was
correct to prevent the escape of a violent felon
(the driver was guilty of murder, because his
accomplice killed the customer in the store as
witnessed by the plain clothes police officer

Shooting the fleeing suspect was correct
to prevent the escape of a violent felon (the

Greetings Sheepdogs,

In order to cause an injury by negligent
discharge, one has to violate all three of
these safety rules at the same time.
Treating a loaded gun as if it
were unloaded. Pointing the gun at someone
you don't intend to shoot. Putting your finger
on the trigger when you don't intend to shoot.
Obeying any one of the safety rules
prevents the injury. Obeying all of the safety
rules ensures happiness.
***** Training *****
One of the things that every class learns from
the simulators is that you must aim your pistol.
You must use your sights. It is very easy to not
aim. It is very easy to miss. So, you have to force
yourself to aim. Focusing on the front sight,
instead of the target is unnatural and extremely
difficult when shooting under stress. It takes
a lot of training, about 2000 repetitions to engrain
the muscle memory and about 100 repetitions per
month to preserve the muscle memory. This is a
perishable skill.
At the last live fire exercise that I attended,
the sleeve of my Gortex jacket got caught between
the hammer and the tang of my model 1911 pistol.
This prevented the pistol from firing. "Tap, rack,
assess" ejected a live round, but did not free the
hammer. The pistol still would not fire. I had
to yank the sleeve out from between the hammer and
the tang to get the pistol working.
Solution: Roll up the sleeve. Don't wear
jackets with too long sleeves. Don't use a pistol
with an exposed hammer. Machine off the hammer spur,
because the hammer should never be manually cocked
nor manually lowered.

***** Pedagogy *****
We have recently added simulator training to
our NRA Defensive Pistol course. We use the Quick
Draw Nashville facility,
http://quickdrawnashville.com/
They have three Meggitt Training Systems simulators.
The problem is to get the students to take the
training seriously. It is far too easy to get into
the mindset of playing an arcade video game. "I
didn't shoot him, but if it were real, I would have
shot him." Such statements, indicating such thoughts,
are wrong. What makes you think you would have shot
in the real world if you didn't shoot in the simulator?
If you couldn't figure out what was going on, if you
couldn't figure out who the bad guys were, if you
couldn't recognize any bad guys, then you should not
have shot. Which was the correct thing to do.
We are not in there to shoot and have fun.
We are in there to practice making the decision to
shoot or not to shoot. There is nothing wrong with
going through a scenario and not firing a shot.
But, that is no fun. That's why IDPA matches are
not optimal training for our purposes. You will
shoot on every stage of fire. There will be very
few no-shoot targets (unrealistically few).
In reality, most of the available targets will
be no-shoots. Think crowded church, crowded
shopping mall, crowded restaurant, crowded movie
theater.

You can't predict random events.
This is deep. Random events cluster
(in time and space). Because, clustered
events have a higher entropy than uniformly
distributed events. Third law of thermodynamics
says that the universe and all non-reversible
systems move toward states of higher entropy.
(Galaxies cluster. They are not uniformly
distributed in space. When you flip a fair
coin, you don't get alternating heads and
tails. You get clusters of heads and clusters
of tails.)
The probability of you guessing when and
where a lethal force encounter will occur is
less than the expected value you would
calculate using any a priori probability
density function.
The cost of losing this bet is
so extreme that the weighted probability
density function is not smooth and
continuous. Rather, we are dealing with
delta Dirac functions. Which puts this
analysis outside of normal game theory
analysis. (If you fix a finite dollar value
to human life, then you are back in the
realm of game theory and actuarial analysis.)
Mark Twain said that fiction is harder
to write than non-fiction, because fiction
has to make sense. So, if this doesn't make
sense, you know why.

This is why it is so critically important
to watch what you're doing as you carefully,
gently holster.
I know some schools and
Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers
(FLETC) teach keeping your head up and looking
around when holstering. But, why would you
be holstering if there is still something to
be looking for? If you're holstering, it
means the situation is copacetic.
Statistically speaking, holstering is
the most dangerous part of any training
regime. Holstering is when students shoot
themselves in the foot and leg.
Chicago cop accidentally shoots himself at courthouse.
http://www.policeone.com/accidental-discharge/articles/8307416-Chicago-cop-accidentally-shoots-himself-at-courthouse/?utm_source=8310075&utm_medium=email&utm_content=TopNewsRight5Title&utm_campaign=P1Member&nlid=8310075
The gun did not discharge. The officer fired
the gun. Guns cannot discharge by themselves.
The officer was not taking the gun from a locker
when he negligently fired the gun. If that were
so, the bullet would have gone into the locker.
The negligent discharge was while the gun was
pointed at the officer's upper leg. That's the
only way the bullet would hit his upper leg.
Watch what you're doing when you holster.
Lots of things can get caught between your pistol
and your holster: your shirt, a draw string from
your windbreaker, etc. If you forcefully ram
your pistol into your holster, you're begging
for a negligent discharge.

I don't have any first hand knowledge
of this. I just thought I'd mention it.
***** Politics *****
***** Miscellany *****
My aunt Lois told me, if you don't have anything nice
to say, don't say anything. Well, I've got to say some
thing, so I just won't mention names.
The effective range of a rifle projectile is the
range over which it is supersonic. Because as long
as it is supersonic, it is out running its shock wave.
When it slows to sonic speed, it is in its own shock
wave and subject to turbulence. This turbulence
causes it to yaw and pitch (tumble). (It's already rolling
due to the rifling in the barrel, so we'll ignore
that perturbation.)
This is not the range at which the bullet is
lethal. That is a much longer range, because the
bullet only needs to be traveling at 400 feet per
second to penetrate a human body.
Sonic speed is about 1200 feet per second at
sea level under standard temperature (25 decrees C)
and pressure (1 atmosphere). [So, smallbore match
ammo has a muzzle speed of ~1100 fps.]
Many pistol rounds are subsonic, as the military
standard 230 grain copper jacketed round nose bullet
in the .45 ACP round, 850 feet per second. Subsonic
pistol bullets lose energy relatively slowly compared to
supersonic rifle bullets, because air resistance goes
as the cube of speed, approximately, in the range
of speeds we are dealing with. They are stable until
they stop, because they never go through the sonic
transition from supersonic to subsonic.
What's the point, Staff? There are cartridge
manufacturers who are selling very light (50 grain
bullet) pistol ammunition with an advertised muzzle
speed of 2000 fps. (The bullet has to be very light,
otherwise the recoil at that speed would be
intolerable.) Hollow point bullets have very
low ballistic coefficients and are not aerodynamically
stable. So, they lose speed very quickly.
Which means these 50 grain bullets are going to go
through the sonic transition from supersonic to
subsonic within self-defense distances,
0 to 25 yards. You can determine the exactly range
with your ballistic calculator.
You can't get accurate shots with a tumbling bullet.
This past Saturday, 2/7/15, I took a class at my gun
club, Strategic Edge in Chapel Hill, TN, and we
saw many examples of bullets that hit the target
sideways, because they went through the sonic transition.
Yes, there are stupid products on the market.
Buyer beware!
Cheers,
Jon

(in time and space). Because, clustered
events have a higher entropy than uniformly
distributed events. Third law of thermodynamics
says that the universe and all non-reversible
systems move toward states of higher entropy.
(Galaxies cluster. They are not uniformly
distributed in space. When you flip a fair
coin, you don't get alternating heads and
tails. You get clusters of heads and clusters
of tails.)
The probability of you guessing when and
where a lethal force encounter will occur is
less than the expected value you would
calculate using any a priori probability
density function.
The cost of losing this bet is
so extreme that the weighted probability
density function is not smooth and
continuous. Rather, we are dealing with
delta Dirac functions. Which puts this
analysis outside of normal game theory
analysis. (If you fix a finite dollar value
to human life, then you are back in the
realm of game theory and actuarial analysis.)
Mark Twain said that fiction is harder
to write than non-fiction, because fiction
has to make sense. So, if this doesn't make
sense, you know why.

This is why it is so critically important
to watch what you're doing as you carefully,
gently holster.
I know some schools and
Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers
(FLETC) teach keeping your head up and looking
around when holstering. But, why would you
be holstering if there is still something to
be looking for? If you're holstering, it
means the situation is copacetic.
Statistically speaking, holstering is
the most dangerous part of any training
regime. Holstering is when students shoot
themselves in the foot and leg.
Chicago cop accidentally shoots himself at courthouse.
http://www.policeone.com/accidental-discharge/articles/8307416-Chicago-cop-accidentally-shoots-himself-at-courthouse/?utm_source=8310075&utm_medium=email&utm_content=TopNewsRight5Title&utm_campaign=P1Member&nlid=8310075
The gun did not discharge. The officer fired
the gun. Guns cannot discharge by themselves.
The officer was not taking the gun from a locker
when he negligently fired the gun. If that were
so, the bullet would have gone into the locker.
The negligent discharge was while the gun was
pointed at the officer's upper leg. That's the
only way the bullet would hit his upper leg.
Watch what you're doing when you holster.
Lots of things can get caught between your pistol
and your holster: your shirt, a draw string from
your windbreaker, etc. If you forcefully ram
your pistol into your holster, you're begging
for a negligent discharge.

Jon

"Failure is an indication that someone

***** Training *****
Yesterday (1/11/15) I shot a match at the
Volunteer Pistol Club in Alexandria, TN. I
missed a target completely. I replayed the
scenario in my mind to figure out why I had
missed. I had seen the target, clearly.
On every other target, I had seen the target
only as a blurry background to my front sight.
The front sight had been clear. So, I missed
because I did not have a proper sight picture
(I was not focused on the front sight).
Why had I not gotten a correct sight picture
on that target? How could I have seen the
target clearly? I must have been looking
through the top lens of my bifocal glasses.
On all the other targets, I had tilted my
head back to look through the bottom lens
of my bifocal. Head tilted back is an
awkward, unnatural position. Should I
change my glasses, or train to get the
correct head position consistently, or
look for some other solution? A bright
fiber optic front sight? Wear my contact
lenses with shooting glasses that allow
me to focus on my front sight? Wear a
different contact lens in my aiming eye
to allow me to focus on my front sight?
(That would interfere when I shoot left
handed, aiming with my left eye, around
the left side of a barrier.)
This is why we train. Some solutions
don't work under stress. We need to find them
and discard them before we train them into
engrained habits and reflex responses.

Why a retention holster is a good idea
for civilian concealed carry,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlJUc8iBcEA
by Massad Ayoob.
I have always taught my students to use
a holster without any retention device,
because high stress causes us to forget to
do things, such as defeat the retention device.
Much of what I put in my emails from
other instructors conflicts with what I teach.
Diversity of opinion is an indication of
independent thought.
The Smith&Wesson M&P Shield has a
semi-single stack magazine. Its thickness is
between a single and double stack magazine.
The only way to find a pistol that fits
your hand and has an acceptable trigger
is to go to a gun store (or your friend's
house who owns every possible gun, we all know
such a person, whether we know it or not)
and try them out. Chamber check,
magazine check. Grip. Dry fire. Hold the
trigger to the rear, rack the slide, reset,
and dry fire.
The IDPA changed their rules to create a
Compact Carry Pistol (CCP) division, because
they found that classifier times were
7% to 24% slower than Stock Service Pistol
(SSP) division for the same person on the
same day. Smaller pistols are more difficult
to shoot. A short barrel means a short sighting
radius. Which means larger sighting error.
Short grip means you can't get all your
fingers on the grip, so you don't have
a stable grip. I hope this influences your
choice of carry pistol.

Lesson to learn: Never speak to the press after such
an incident. They will make it appear that you didn't
need to shoot the assailants (because they have an
agenda). Thank God the District Attorney did the
right thing and did not press charges.

The headline is misleading (as it is meant

I enthusiastically recommend Challenge Targets.
Quality design, materials, and workmanship.
Clear instructions for assembly and use.
The targets reliably leave the bullet remains on
the ground in front of the target, as opposed to
ricocheting anywhere else. You're going to need
a crescent wrench and a four foot length of 2X4
to assemble it.

Greetings Concealed Weapons Permittees,
***** Mindset *****
"Failure is an indication that someone
tried to do something." -- Ingersoll
***** Training *****
Yesterday (1/11/15) I shot a match at the
Volunteer Pistol Club in Alexandria, TN. I
missed a target completely. I replayed the
scenario in my mind to figure out why I had
missed. I had seen the target, clearly.
On every other target, I had seen the target
only as a blurry background to my front sight.
The front sight had been clear. So, I missed
because I did not have a proper sight picture
(I was not focused on the front sight).
Why had I not gotten a correct sight picture
on that target? How could I have seen the
target clearly? I must have been looking
through the top lens of my bifocal glasses.
On all the other targets, I had tilted my
head back to look through the bottom lens
of my bifocal. Head tilted back is an
awkward, unnatural position. Should I
change my glasses, or train to get the
correct head position consistently, or
look for some other solution? A bright
fiber optic front sight? Wear my contact
lenses with shooting glasses that allow
me to focus on my front sight? Wear a
different contact lens in my aiming eye
to allow me to focus on my front sight?
(That would interfere when I shoot left
handed, aiming with my left eye, around
the left side of a barrier.)
This is why we train. Some solutions
don't work under stress. We need to find them
and discard them before we train them into
engrained habits and reflex responses.

Who is teaching the course? Get his resume.
Vet the instructor. [Several employers have
told me, during interviews, that they were
surprised that I had actually done everything
on my resume, because everybody lies. A sad
commentary on our society. -- Jon Low]
Find out what they are teaching, especially
the rules of engagement. Are they teaching
how to better compete in matches?
Are they teaching police or military tactics?
Are they teaching civilian concealed carry
tactics?

Arm stop

From the Gracie Jiu Jitsu Academy,
"close quarter battle" technique,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stBfi_iru5M
Excerpt:
"1. The enemy always has the ambush advantage.
2. Never grapple with the enemy by choice.
3. There is no tap out."
This technique is a natural extension of
the retention Sul position that we teach
while scanning. And is another reason to
have a minimum 4 inch barrel on your pistol.
The circular motion to get the enemy off your
pistol is exactly the same as that used in
baton and rifle close quarter combat.

***** Gear *****
Why a retention holster is a good idea
for civilian concealed carry,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlJUc8iBcEA
by Massad Ayoob.
I have always taught my students to use
a holster without any retention device,
because high stress causes us to forget to
do things, such as defeat the retention device.
Much of what I put in my emails from
other instructors conflicts with what I teach.
Diversity of opinion is an indication of
independent thought.
The Smith&Wesson M&P Shield has a
semi-single stack magazine. Its thickness is
between a single and double stack magazine.
The only way to find a pistol that fits
your hand and has an acceptable trigger
is to go to a gun store (or your friend's
house who owns every possible gun, we all know
such a person, whether we know it or not)
and try them out. Chamber check,
magazine check. Grip. Dry fire. Hold the
trigger to the rear, rack the slide, reset,
and dry fire.
The IDPA changed their rules to create a
Compact Carry Pistol (CCP) division, because
they found that classifier times were
7% to 24% slower than Stock Service Pistol
(SSP) division for the same person on the
same day. Smaller pistols are more difficult
to shoot. A short barrel means a short sighting
radius. Which means larger sighting error.
Short grip means you can't get all your
fingers on the grip, so you don't have
a stable grip. I hope this influences your
choice of carry pistol.
