"In defense of the trigger reset (yes: it's important)"
http://blog.beretta.com/trigger-reset-is-important?utm_medium=social
A good article on the finer points of trigger
control.
I disagree with the author, Chappy.
I believe reset should be done after the
sights are back on the target that you
just shot, not during the recoil. The
shot process isn't finished until the
sights are back on the target that you
just shot. Getting the sights back on
target is part of follow through.
Touch the trigger, take the slack out
of the trigger (if the trigger does not
have slack and a hard stop, it is not
correctly designed for combat), smoothly
increase pressure (Do not intentionally
fire the shot. With increasing pressure
the shot will fire, surprise break.),
trap the trigger to the rear, get the
sights back on target, reset the trigger,
move your eyes and head to the next target,
move your sights to the next target (Yes,
you have to do it in that order. If you
move your eyes and sights together, you
will overshoot your target.)
Note: Follow through determines
where the pistol is pointed when the
bullet exits the muzzle. Which occurs
a millisecond after primer detonation.
Sight alignment and sight picture
determine where the pistol is pointed
at primer detonation.
Note: It is very common to watch
a shooter realize that he missed the
last target and have to move the sights
back to the last target, because he has
already started moving the sights to
the next target. If your follow through
has you getting the sights back on the
target before resetting or moving to the
next target, you won't miss the target.
Why the safety rules are so important.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBX7mEBVOao
Yes, brand new guns from reputable
manufactures can fire with the safety on
and without the trigger being pulled.
Recall notice at

A 55-year-old woman accidentally shot herself on Monday afternoon
http://patch.com/illinois/crystallake/woman-shoots-herself-crystal-lake-gun-range
This is why it is so important to dress
properly when shooting at the range. Always
wear high neck shirts, so hot brass can't go
down the front of your shirt. Always wear a
wide brimmed hat, so hot brass can't get
caught between your glasses and your eye.
When you miss, STOP!, and revert to
fundamentals by talking yourself through
the shot process to ensure the hit.
For instance --
Align the top of the front sight
with the top of the rear sight. Center
the front sight in the rear sight notch.
Place the top of the front sight on the
center of mass of the target. Sharp
focus on the front sight, seeing the
scratches on the front sight. Touch
the trigger, take the slack out of the
trigger, 1/8th pressure, 2/8ths pressure,
3/8ths pressure, 4/8ths pressure, 5/8ths
pressure, 6/8ths pressure, 7/8ths
pressure (The pistol will fire long
before you get to 8/8ths pressure.),
trap the trigger to the rear, get the
sights back on target, reset.
Or, if that is too detailed for you,
try --
sights, slack out, press, trap, sights, reset.
If you missed, you did something
wrong. If you repeat the wrong shot
process, you will miss again.
Every miss is destroying property and
injuring, possible killing, innocent
by standers. So, we cannot afford to
miss. We hit on the first shot by
executing the correct shot process.
It is only long when we first learn
it. With practice, it compresses in
time and becomes very fast.
When we get lazy or forget or
our form breaks down due to stress,
we must revert to fundamentals and talk
ourselves through the shot process to
ensure a hit.

"How Ammo Gets Made"
http://bearingarms.com/ammo-gets-made/
Ankara, Turkey, great place.
Annealing means to heat and cool slowly
to removes internal stress, crystal defects,
and dislocations. Not necessarily harden the
brass, as the narrator states. (Annealing
usually makes the metal more malleable,
softer.) Heating and slow cooling results
in larger crystals in the crystalline
structure of the metal. Because the crystals
grow as the metal cools before it freezes.
Tempering or quenching is the process
of heating and quickly cooling by quenching
in oil (as opposed to water, because the
layer of steam acts as an insulator
preventing heat transfer). Quick cooling
results in small crystals in the crystalline
structure of the metal. The crystals get
frozen before they have a chance to grow.
This allows, for instance, a finer (less
jagged) knife edge (at the microscopic
level).
Annealing makes the brass more
malleable, so the neck can be compressed
to hold the bullet tightly.

Q: The color of the light from my LED flashlight looks
different than the light from the same model flashlight
when I shine them on the wall together. Is one LED defective?
A: There is nothing wrong with either LED. LED technology
produces an unavoidably wide range of tints. Streamlight
pays extra to buy the color bins which are closest to
perceived white light. The light will always be bluer
than an incandescent, and there will be more variation
between identical products than with incandescent lamps.

"Thoughts on Long Guns and Handguns"

"6 Tips To Getting A Better Grip On Your Gun"
http://blog.springfield-armory.com/6-tips-to-getting-a-better-grip-on-your-gun
I often post things that I disagree with.
Or, do not completely agree with. I try not
to be dogmatic.
1. "You need to hold firmly."
Yes, I agree. The enemy will try to
grab your pistol and take if from you.
2. "Lock your wrists."
Locking a joint generally means to
move it to the limit of its range of motion.
But, this is not what Leatham means.
Rob Leatham does not tell the reader how
to lock or immobilize their wrist joints. So,
he states a goal without giving the means to
achieve the goal. The solution we learned at
Front Sight was to push with the firing side
hand and pull with the support side hand.
That creates the vice that Leatham refers to.
3. "The angle the gun sits in relation to
your arm is not that important."
I disagree. Unless the barrel of the
pistol is in line with the bones of the fore
arm, the pistol will torque to the side when
fired. This torque will move the point of
impact to that side.
"Being able to place your finger
properly on the trigger is important."
I agree. The part of the finger
contacting the trigger must be perpendicular
to the axis of the barrel. So, that there
is no lateral component of force on the
trigger. The force vector should be parallel
to the barrel.
4. "Two Hands Are Better Than One"
I agree. Triangles are stable structures
in the plane of the triangle. This is true
with both the Weaver and isosceles arm
positions. Though the member analysis
(a thing civil engineers do) of the Weaver
position is a bit more complex.
5. "Keep the grip pressure consistent."
I agree. Consistency is accuracy.
6. "Most think proper grip will just come
with practice, but it doesn't unless you
think about it."
I agree. Speed comes automatically
with repetition (practice). Accuracy
does not come automatically. You have
to concentrate.

Paul Gomez explains the importance of a "flagged thumb".
Front Sight teaches it as a high relaxed thumb. When in
a close contact position, one must keep the slide of the
pistol away from the body to prevent the slide from
getting caught in your clothing or hitting your breast.
The flagged thumb helps to prevent the top of the pistol
from rolling into your body.

"Propaganda"
posted by John S. Farnam on 27 Mar 2015
http://defense-training.com/dti/propaganda/
Farnam is referring to U.S. Army Pvt. Bowe Bergdahl.
(Not Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, because it is wrong to
automatically promote a deserter while serving with
enemy forces. He was not an American prisoner of war
in any sense of the term.)
When Bergdahl left his post, the Army classified him as
a deserter. The Obama administration forced the U.S.
Army to change Bergdahl's status to some never before
heard of status to allow his trade for the five Taliban
enemy combatants. [ Col. David Hunt confirms this
in his interview with Alan Colmes,
http://radio.foxnews.com/2015/03/27/col-hunt-bergdahl-will-not-get-any-jail-time/
] When talking with friends, we always cite an open
source, to credibly deny the use of any other source.
Old habits are hard to break.
The Taliban leaders traded for Bergdahl were:
Mohammad Nabi Omari, a military field commander
(equivalent to an U.S. Major General, Division Commander,
by my reckoning).
Mullah Norullah Noori, a Taliban provincial governor.
Mullah Mohammad Fazl, the Taliban Deputy Defense Minister.
Abdul Haq Wasiq, a senior Taliban intelligence officer.
Khirullah Said Wali Khairkhwa, the Minister of the Interior
and a provincial governor.
You will hear these names again soon. Qatar will
release them to rejoin the Taliban.
The Taliban, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, et al
recently met in Egypt to form a coalition to fight
Iran, Hezbolah, Muslim Brotherhood, Islamic State, et al.
So, Qatar and the Taliban are allies against Iran et al.
So, Qatar is going to keep the five locked up for two
years? Unlikely.

6. "Most think proper grip will just come
with practice, but it doesn't unless you
think about it."
I agree. Speed comes automatically
with repetition (practice). Accuracy
does not come automatically. You have
to concentrate.

"Weapon Retention & Shooting the Bad Guy off the Gun”
http://www.recoilweb.com/mmg-weapon-retention-shooting-the-bad-guy-off-the-gun-62499.html

So, Qatar is going to keep the five locked up for two
years? Unlikely.

“Like parachutes and fire-extinguishers,
guns are emergency/safety equipment.
When you require one, your need will be
immediate, critical, and desperate. And,
when unprepared, you’ll likely never
need one again!” -- Anonymous
When I was a child, my paternal grandmother
and I were arguing about defensive driving. I
had learned in school that you can always avoid
a collision (I am in control attitude).
My grandmother told me that sometimes you can't
do anything to defend yourself when driving
(I am a victim attitude). She cited an example:
You're stopped at an intersection and a driver
(not a car, a car is an inanimate object)
drives up behind you and rams you from the rear.
There is nothing you can do about that.
I believed that, until I took a course from
Front Sight, where Brad Ackman told us about his
mother who was stopped at an intersection. She
was checking her rear view mirror and saw a car
barreling down on her. So, she pulled off the
road, onto the shoulder of the road, to get out
of the way. (She had intentionally left enough
space between her car and the car in front of
her to make this maneuver.) Unfortunately, the
bad driver plowed into the car that was in front
of her, pushing it into the intersection, causing
a collision with crossing traffic. But, Brad's
mother avoided injury.
You don't have to be a victim. You can
always avoid the incident, if you pay attention
to what's going on around you. This is truth.
But, more importantly, it is attitude.

"Why don’t people train?"
https://tacticalprofessor.wordpress.com/2015/03/11/why-dont-people-train/
Claude Werner says a lot of untrained people
successfully defend themselves with guns everyday.
So, why spend the time and money to train?
My answer is that training is not just to allow
you to win the fight. Training is to allow you
to avoid the fight.
In golf, the more you train, the fewer
strokes you are forced to play on the course.
So, as with self-defense, the more you train,
the fewer shots you will be forced to fire in
combat.
Good training should teach you principles
that allow you to avoid complacency and stay in
condition yellow. Good training should teach
you life survival skills, not just gun skills.
Good training should be teaching you how
to end the fight with your first shot, even if
good judgement forces you to continue firing.
(Good training would allow you to explain the
preceding sentence.)

What's the most important attribute of avoiding injury?
Attitude.
In the Marine Corps, we were trained to high crawl
(crawl on our hands and knees) and low crawl (on our
belly, side of the head scraping along the ground, using
elbows, feet, and knees to push ourselves forward)
to avoid getting injured or killed. In a recent
conversation with a lady, who had slipped on
the ice and broken her hip, requiring total joint
replacement surgery and many months of rehab,
I suggested that in the future she should crawl over
the ice. I told her that I had negotiated treacherous
ice safely many times by crawling. She told me that
she was a lady and that crawling would be
undignified. So, she would never do such a thing.
***** Training *****
Slow is smooth. Smooth is efficient. Efficient is fast.
Speed will come automatically with practice.
Accuracy will not automatically improve with practice.
You must force yourself to keep your aiming eye open
through the shot process and follow through. So, that
you can watch where the front sight is going during the
follow through, while you have the trigger trapped to
the rear. And bring the sights back onto the target,
before resetting the trigger. Watching your follow through
allows you to control your follow through, which is essential.
You must focus on the front sight. Sharp clear focus,
see the serrations on the front sight. Visual focus equals
mental concentration. If you are not focused on the front
sight, you are focused on the target. Which means you are
concentrating on the target. In such a case, your front
sight will wander off and you'll never notice it.
You must get a surprise break to defeat your autonomic
nervous system. Otherwise, you will anticipate the recoil
and push the shot low left for right handers, low right for
left handers. Do not fire the shot. Hold the sights on
the target and smoothly increase pressure on the trigger.
The pistol will fire. You don't have to make it fire.
If you intentionally fire the pistol, you've got a good
chance of missing. If you let the pistol fire, without
forcing the shot, you will be able to place the bullet
where you want it on demand every time. In particular,
on the first shot. Which is the most important, because
if you can end the fight with your first shot, you minimize
your injuries. Yes, this is counter intuitive. Yes,
this takes a great deal of practice to engrain in your
brain.
Perfect practice makes perfect. Imperfect practice
engrains bad habits that must be broken and fixed.
Improve Your Trigger Pull with These 6 Tips

***** Pedagogy *****
I have had many many students take offense when I tell
them that they missed because they were not aiming. They
assure me that they were aiming. I'm standing behind them
when they are shooting and I can see their pistol far below
their line of sight (the line from their eye to the target).
It is natural to focus and concentrate on the target in a
high stress situation. So, it is easy to neglect to aim.
Shooting well under stress is not easy. It is not
natural. We are not born with guns in our hands.
The natural reaction to loud noises (report) and sharp
jerking motions (recoil) is to tense up our muscles and
shut our eyes. It will take a great deal of training
to defeat this innate instinctive response to report and
recoil. But, we must in order to shoot well.

Closing the distance to the bad guy in

Shooting the accomplice (on the motorcycle) was
correct to prevent the escape of a violent felon

Greetings Sheepdogs,
***** Mindset *****
In order to cause an injury by negligent
discharge, one has to violate all three of
these safety rules at the same time.
Treating a loaded gun as if it
were unloaded. Pointing the gun at someone
you don't intend to shoot. Putting your finger
on the trigger when you don't intend to shoot.
Obeying any one of the safety rules
prevents the injury. Obeying all of the safety
rules ensures happiness.
***** Training *****
One of the things that every class learns from
the simulators is that you must aim your pistol.
You must use your sights. It is very easy to not
aim. It is very easy to miss. So, you have to force
yourself to aim. Focusing on the front sight,
instead of the target is unnatural and extremely
difficult when shooting under stress. It takes
a lot of training, about 2000 repetitions to engrain
the muscle memory and about 100 repetitions per
month to preserve the muscle memory. This is a
perishable skill.
At the last live fire exercise that I attended,
the sleeve of my Gortex jacket got caught between
the hammer and the tang of my model 1911 pistol.
This prevented the pistol from firing. "Tap, rack,
assess" ejected a live round, but did not free the
hammer. The pistol still would not fire. I had
to yank the sleeve out from between the hammer and
the tang to get the pistol working.
Solution: Roll up the sleeve. Don't wear
jackets with too long sleeves. Don't use a pistol
with an exposed hammer. Machine off the hammer spur,
because the hammer should never be manually cocked
nor manually lowered.

***** Pedagogy *****
We have recently added simulator training to
our NRA Defensive Pistol course. We use the Quick
Draw Nashville facility,
http://quickdrawnashville.com/
They have three Meggitt Training Systems simulators.
The problem is to get the students to take the
training seriously. It is far too easy to get into
the mindset of playing an arcade video game. "I
didn't shoot him, but if it were real, I would have
shot him." Such statements, indicating such thoughts,
are wrong. What makes you think you would have shot
in the real world if you didn't shoot in the simulator?
If you couldn't figure out what was going on, if you
couldn't figure out who the bad guys were, if you
couldn't recognize any bad guys, then you should not
have shot. Which was the correct thing to do.
We are not in there to shoot and have fun.
We are in there to practice making the decision to
shoot or not to shoot. There is nothing wrong with
going through a scenario and not firing a shot.
But, that is no fun. That's why IDPA matches are
not optimal training for our purposes. You will
shoot on every stage of fire. There will be very
few no-shoot targets (unrealistically few).
In reality, most of the available targets will
be no-shoots. Think crowded church, crowded
shopping mall, crowded restaurant, crowded movie
theater.
