CWP, 3 October 2014 A.D.
Greetings Concealed Weapons Permittees,

***** Questions and Answers *****

Karl:  Should we use “target” ammunition for personal defense?
I have been told to use better than “target” quality ammo,
though I do not know what that would be.  Have I been talking
with the hollow point crowd?  That we learned we should not
follow because step 1 is chambering and FMJ is more likely to
chamber than hollow point.  Plus more mass/penetration with FMJ.

Jon:  I believe that you should use "target" ammo for personal
defense.  By this I mean round nose, full metal jacket,
standard velocity (as opposed to +P or +P+) ammunition.
Because it chambers more reliably than any other bullet type;
and reliable feeding is more important than terminal ballistics.
The gun must go bang when you pull the trigger.
I believe that "self-defense" ammo is grossly over priced.
My friend, <redacted>, was attacked by a pit pull.  He fired
five rounds into the dog before it stopped its attack.  None of his
bullets exited the dog.  He was shooting copper jacketed
round nose bullets in a standard .45 ACP caliber.
Of all the commercially available self-defense cartridges,
this gave maximum penetration; and none of his bullets
exited the dog.
When defending against a car jacking, you may have to shoot
through your car door or window.  When defending against an assailant,
you may have to shoot through the bones of his arms and rib cage
to reach a vital organ in order to stop the attack.  So, penetration
is essential.  Full metal jacketed round nose bullets give the best
penetration.
Injury or death of innocent bystanders due to over penetration
of the intended target is a perceived liability concern, but not
statistically significant.  [citation - Police Officers Safety
Association lecture]

Karl:  Brass vs. aluminum cases.  Which do you prefer?  Why?

Jon:  Brass case ammunition is preferable because you can reload it.
Aluminum and steel cases cannot be reliably reloaded, because the
metal is not malleable enough.  The aluminum and steel cased
ammo is generally cheaper.  I have never noticed a functional
difference.

Karl:  FMJ vs. TMJ.  What is the difference?  Which do you prefer? Why?

Jon:  Full metal jacket (FMJ) refers to a copper, brass, or
bronze cup that is formed in the swaging process into a
uniform jacket of the lead bullet.  The interior of the jacket
is usually coated with tin or some other metal so that the
heat and pressure causes a chemical bond between the lead
core and the jacket.  So, they don't separate on impact.
There is also a copper wash or copper coating that is much
thinner than the jacket referred to above.
Total metal jacket (TMJ) refers to the bullet being completely
covered by the jacket.  FMJ bullets usually have an
exposed lead base.  The hot burning propellant vaporizes the
exposed lead, so you get some lead in the air.  The TMJ is
supposed to prevent this.
If I were immortal, I would be concerned about lead.  But,
having worked at the National Bureau of Standards (mass
spectrometry section and activation analysis section) where
we were regularly tested for lead (mercury, radiation, and
other things), I am satisfied that my lead exposure will
not reach a significant level within my life span.

Karl:  With regards to 9mm bullets of 115, 124, and 147 grains.
Our lesson on stopping power suggests 147 is preferred.  Correct?

Jon:  Within the context of self-defense shootings,
I believe that penetration (FBI recommends 12 to 18
inches in ballistic gelatin) is the correct quantifier of
"stopping power".  I believe that momentum (mass X velocity)
is the correct quantifier of penetration of a bullet in a human body.
Therefore, I believe that one should maximize the mass
of the bullet so as to maximize the momentum of the
bullet after impact (terminal ballistics).
(I realize that I have skipped a lot of steps in this argument.)

Karl:  CCI seems to me to have a reputation of being a good brand.
Reliable and clean.  Also PMC.  But that sense is not informed.
Any brands you believe superior?  Why?

Jon:  I have never noticed a functional difference in
commercially available factory new ammunition.
They all seem to work just fine.

"Mindset of Shooting"
by Jon Hodoway
http://www.waltherarms.com/mindset-of-shooting/
Excerpt:
"... invite the professionals to the emergency
as early as possible. And on those occasions
when we don’t have the gift of time to allow
for the professionals to arrive we should be
well versed in judiciously deploying our firearm."

Someone saw an old man planting a carob tree.
This person asked the old man when the tree would
bear fruit.  "After 70 years," the old man said.
"What!" the other man exclaimed.  "Do you expect
to live 70 years and eat the fruit of your labor?"
The old man answered, "I did not find the world
desolate when I entered it.  As my ancestors
planted for me before I was born, so I plant for
those who will come after me."
-- From Taaith, Fol. 23, col., in The Talmud
www.sacred-texts.com/jud/hl/hl46.htm
Every sheepdog we train is another sentinel
who will protect our children, grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, ...
We can also reasonably expect a significant
fraction of those we train to train others
in the skills and mindset of the sheepdogs.

The truth about “stopping power” – Anatomy First
http://www.breachbangclear.com/the-truth-about-stopping-power-anatomy-first/
Excerpts paraphrased:
There is no well defined quantification
of stopping power.  If you can't quantify
it, you can't measure it.  If you can't
measure it, it is outside the realm of
science.
The bullet is the wrong topic.
Where to place the bullet is the correct
topic of discussion.
"... the human body twists and contorts
in frustrating ways and this makes your
“center mass” shooting a severe difficulty."
The author, Aaron Cowan, cites two articles,
"Whats Wrong With Wound Ballistic Data, and Why"
by Dr. M.L. Fackler (1987), and
"Undeniable Evidence" by Dr. M.L. Fackler (1999)
in "Wound Ballistics Review",
International Wound Ballistics Association
(no longer an active entity),
to say that speed of the bullet is more
important than the mass of the bullet for
penetration.  Which would lead the reader to
buy the lighter faster bullet as opposed to
the heavier slower bullet.
This directly contradicts the opinion at
Front Sight Firearms Institute.  Front Sight's
reasoning is that the kinetic energy equation
is not appropriate.  Rather, the momentum
equation should be used because momentum is
a conserved quantity.  Kinetic energy is not
conserved, so it's really hard to say anything
about it. (Total energy is conserved.  Kinetic
energy is not conserved.  Kinetic energy is
easily converted to other forms of energy.)
Upon impact with the body, the bullet rapidly
loses its kinetic energy (speed).  If the
bullet does not fragment (or disintegrate)
the mass is approximately constant, as it
would be with a copper jacketed round nose
bullet.  So, the more massive bullet will
retain more momentum, which Front Sight
interprets to mean would give deeper
penetration.
I do love to give my readers
opposing opinions.

"Why Firearms Training is a Must"
by Jon Hodoway
http://www.waltherarms.com/firearms-training-must/
Excerpt:
"Guys, don’t attempt to instruct your beloved
how to shoot. You are emotionally connected to
each other. This makes it very difficult to be
objective for both parties."

***** Pedagogy *****

The IDPA match is an essential part of
our Defensive Pistol course.  But, we will not
be shooting the match as all the other
competitors will be shooting the match.
They will be going fast to win the
competition, to get a good score.  We will
be going slow to avoid getting killed.
They will often fail to engage a target,
because they didn't see the target,
because they were going too fast.  We will
go slow enough to ensure all threats
behind us have been incapacitated.
They will crowd cover.  We will stay
away from walls, because we understand
how bullets ricochet.  We will stay away
from corners because we know there is an
enemy behind the corner who will grab our
gun or arms.
They will not be too concerned
about shooting innocent bystanders
(it's only a three second penalty).
We will never shoot a "no shoot" target,
because we understand that that is a
loved one who will die when we shoot her.
     "Tactically correct" is different
from the tactics used to win the IDPA game
or the IPSC game.  Let us never confuse them.

***** Tactics *****

In the class that I am presently giving,
a student asked, "What if I'm not sure about
the guy?  I have an uncomfortable feeling
about him, but there is no overt speech or
action that I could articulate to a jury that
would reasonably cause me to present my gun."
First option is to run away.  [If you
fear looking like a coward in front of your
girlfriend, you need to bring your girlfriend
to a self-defense class to educate her, so
that she will understand that running away
is the smart, mature, and manly thing to do.]
Distance is your friend, it gives you time.
But, if you have your kids with you, or are
carrying someone else's baby,
this might not be an option.
In such a situation, you must determine
the intent of the guy.  Screaming "STOP!"
is a means of determining intent.  Any normal
person would stop or walk away.  If the guy
continues toward you, one could infer malicious
intent.
     Profiling (while politically incorrect)
is a reasonable tool.  Sheriff Nash (Dorchester
County, South Carolina) said that signs of a
criminal are:  no shirt, tattoos, bad teeth,
and body odor.  Gang tattoos are a dead give
away, though if you don't study gangs, you
probably won't be able to recognize them.
Calling 911 is a smart thing to do.
Not only does it let the guy know that you're
calling for police, it creates a witness for
you.  Be aware that modern smart phones are
controlled by the 911 dispatcher, not you.
You can't hang up the phone, only the
dispatcher can hang up the phone.
Even if it turns out to be nothing
(or you've turned it into nothing by your
actions) a police officer will probably show
up to talk to you.  Yes, this happened to me,
while lunching with ladies from my church
in Lebanon, TN.  It was much less
embarrassing than one might expect.

Why tritium sights are futile.
http://sagedynamics.blogspot.com/2014/09/you-dont-need-night-sights-gearcentric.html?m=0
On the other hand, the purpose of
tritium sights is to enable you to find
your gun in the dark, not necessarily
aim your gun in the dark.
What are we aiming at in the dark?
If we light up the target with a
flashlight to positively identify the
target, the sights will be silhouetted
against the target.  So, no need for
tritium sights.

by Aaron Cowan.  September 3, 2014
http://www.recoilweb.com/everyman-use-of-force-grey-and-not-so-grey-areas-49633.html
Excerpt:
"[Use of lethal force] does not require that
your attacker be armed with a weapon,
nor have already injured you."
The author refers to reasonable distance
when attacked with a contact weapon.  Remember
the Tueller drill.  Seven yards (21 feet) is
too close.  The author says to get the 21 foot
rule out of your head.
Many schools teach two rounds to the
center of mass and then assess the situation.
But, the author says use maximum force to
stop the attack.  That is, continue to shoot
until the threat stops.
"Some people deserve to be shot."

to swallow ones pride are two great ways to
avoid a situation that can devolve into

"The Importance of Training"
by Aaron Cowan
November 21, 2013
http://www.recoilweb.com/the-importance-of-training-35429.html

I just got back from a three day level 3 rifle coaches
course at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs,
CO.  There was a pisol coaches course in the room next door
and we had a lot of interaction with them.
Much of the learning came from discussions with
other national level coaches.  There was a lot of conflict
between what is taught in the professional gun schools
and what is taught in the Olympic/International
coaching schools.
For instance, they didn't recognize "surpise break",
and when I expalined it, they rejected it as crude and
not "what the elite do".
They don't feel the need to teach the safety rule,
trigger finger in the register position when the
pistol is not on the target, as when resting between shots.
Because, they fear not getting the trigger finger back in
exactly the same position on every shot.
But, of course, Olympic shooting is a very
different game.

***** Gear *****

     The magazine pouch is necessary.
It should carry at least one magazine,
and perhaps your flashlight.
You need to carry an extra magazine to
clear malfunctions, not because you
fear running out of ammunition.
Only fully loaded magazines will be in
your magazine pouch.  Empty magazines
will be on the ground.  Partially
filled magazines will be in your pocket.
     Leather pouches are nice,
but Kydex are cheaper and perfectly
functional.

     The dummy ammunition, Snap-Cap
(brass base) or Zoom (machined aluminum),
is essential for training.  Your pistol
must function correctly when dry practicing.
Your extractor will eventually rip the rim
off the cheap plastic dummy ammo.

The best long term decision on a
flashlight would be a rechargeable flashlight
such as the Streamlight Strion,
http://www.streamlight.com/en-us/product/class.html?cid=1
because the cost of batteries will kill you.
     The disposable battery type flashlights
are cheaper,
http://www.streamlight.com/en-us/product/class.html?cid=9
Or, the Surefire, though they are much more
expensive,
http://www.surefire.com/illumination/flashlights.html?application_filterset=MTY%3D&category_filterset=MjU%3D&clear=1
     Amazon.com is usually the cheapest
place to buy them.
     I've found perfectly functional
flashlights in the sporting goods stores
for as little as $40.  The important thing
is to have a thumb pressure switch on the
rear of the flashlight.  Press on,
release off.  No clicking, no strobes,
no colors.  Simple is better.

***** Mindset (attitude) *****

Why you should carry your pistol

Yes, this is a matter of attitude,
more than a matter of tactics or mechanics.

***** Training *****

Drawing a pistol in a car,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ek50iqNOfus

     NRA Free Style
http://www.nrafreestyle.tv/media-lab#/media-lab/list/media-lab-season-1-episodes
I found episode 12 very interesting.

I have noticed - in combat, training, and
competition - the predisposition to rush.  That
is to say, moving so fast that the operator
doesn't see enemies in plain view and so does
not engage them.  Yes, the enemy is wearing
camouflage.  Yes, it's dark at night.  Yes,
he's hiding behind cover.  Yes, you are under
extreme stress.  So, you have to train yourself
to slow down, to look carefully, to see things.
Strive to scan and shoot from a stationary
position behind cover.  We practice shooting
while moving, but this has a low probability
of hitting.  Far superior is to hunker down behind
cover, scan and shoot from this covered position.
If you have to move, move to cover.  This means
you have to find cover before moving, not
while moving.  Run directly to the covered
position.  Even tanks loiter in covered positions
(forests, cities, etc.), never out in the open.

"The best way to improve your accuracy is
by not shooting live ammo.  Dry practice."
-- Tom McHale (paraphrase)

"You should be firing 10 shots in dry
practice for every live fire shot."
"Live fire is only to verify what you've
learned in dry practice."
-- Ignatius Piazza (paraphrase)

Scattering your rounds low left (for a
right hander, low right for a left hander)
indicates anticipation of the
recoil and pushing against the anticipated
recoil before the bullet exits the muzzle.
[Don't adjust the sights.]
The solution is to achieve a surprise break.
Do not intentionally fire the shot.  Rather,
touch the trigger, take the slack out of the
trigger, smoothly increase pressure on the
trigger while holding the sights on the
target.  The pistol will eventually fire.
But, because you don't know exactly when,
the bullet will be past the muzzle before
you disturb the shot with your autonomic
nervous system responses.
It's almost impossible to learn the
surprise break while firing live rounds,
much less engrain the correct muscle memory.
You have to practice dry.  In general, it
takes 2000 repetitions to engrain muscle
memory.  So, if you correctly dry practice,
achieving a surprise break on 10 shots (it
may take you 20 shots to get 10 correct shots)
a day, you can engrain the surprise break
muscle memory in less than a year.  Then
you will be able to place rounds on target
on demand, not by luck.

"Ten Things You Learn by Carrying a Gun Every Day"
by Tom McHale
http://www.outdoorhub.com/stories/2014/08/06/ten-things-learn-carrying-gun-every-day/

In training the instructor will give you
a verbal command to start the exercise.
But, in combat a visual cue will cause
you to initiate, if you are aware and
have made a plan.

It is very common for the shooter to close his
eyes in response to (or anticipation of) the recoil
and report.  The shooter must force himself to
keep his aiming eye open to watch the sights
move through recoil and back to the target.
Because follow through determines where the
pistol is pointed when the bullet exits the muzzle.
[Sight alignment, sight picture, and trigger
control determine where the pistol is pointed
when the firing pin hits the primer, a millisecond
before the bullet exits the muzzle.  A thousandth
of a second is a long time.  More than enough
time to move the sights off the human sized
target at 3 yards range.]

***** Pedagogy *****

Hey, Staff, why do you waste class time reading
the lectures to us?  Just email the lectures to us,
and we can read them on our own.
First, it is highly unlikely that any of the students
will read the lectures.  If the student didn't read
the lecture before the class, the student will not
be able to ask questions about the lecture during
the class.
Second, the purpose of the lecture is to
generate questions and discussion.  Some people
learn by listening, others by actively questioning
and discussing.
Third, the lectures are copyrighted.  While we
have permission to present the lectures, we don't
have permission to duplicate and distribute the
lectures.

Hey, Staff, if the lectures are copyrighted,
why not rewrite the information in your own
words and distribute them with the other class
documents?  All the information is already
in the public domain.
     First, that would be unethical.
Second, the lectures provide a great deal of
opinion, some of which I disagree with, and so
would never write in my own words.
Third, the lectures teach some techniques that
conflict with the techniques we teach.  This is
intentional.  We want our students to know that
there are other techniques and other schools of
thought.
We are teaching a mindset and a skill set,
not a religion.  So, we are not dogmatic.
We teach what we teach because we think it is
the best.  But, we are not infallible.  Those
who have been with us for a few years know that
the curriculum has changed as we strive to
teach the best practices.

At a recent IDPA match, a gentleman sat in
a folding metal chair in preparation for the
start of a stage of fire.  When he stood up, the
magazine in the magazine pouch on the his belt
positioned on his back picked up the chair by its
back rest.
Best to keep your magazines in the
9 or 10 o'clock position with the magazine pouch
inside your belt, so the belt holds your pouch
tight against your body, preventing them
from flopping around, preventing anything from

by Brannon LeBouef
http://www.recoilweb.com/a-training-roadmap-one-instructors-suggestions-2-of-2-37247.html
Mr. LeBouef recommends first aid medical training.
I think CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation ) and
AED (automated external defibrillator ) would also be useful.
I would add water safety and rescue training.
Stop the bleeding (direct pressure, tourniquet
[Yes, the Red Cross teaches tourniquets now days.]),
start the breathing, treat for shock, and get help.
Mr. LeBouef recommends defensive/evasive driving training.
That can be fairly expensive.  There are many cars
that you would not want to attempt to spin around.
All SUV's are unstable.  Friends in my Marine Corps reserve unit
who had recently returned from a driving course at a Georgia Police
training facility told me that they were trained to bump the back end
of the fleeing car with the front end of their car in a sideways
direction to cause the fleeing car to spin out, but never to do this
to an SUV, because it will flip over.
(Sorry, I can't remember the technical term for this maneuver.)
Practicing driving backwards is useful and practical.
Be careful, because cars are not stable when driven backwards.

***** Gear *****

Several people have asked me what they
should buy, as in everything in a complete set.
So, this is my recommendation without knowing
anything about the person.
A stiff belt to hold your heavy gun and ammo - $40
Make:  Blackhawk
Model:  CQB/Rigger's Belt
http://www.blackhawk.com/product/CQBRiggers-Belt,800,1384.htm
Suspenders to hold your up your belt and gear - $14
Make:  Perry Products, Inc.

     A pistol - $460
Make:  Springfield Armory
Model:  XD chambered in .45 ACP with a 4 inch barrel
http://www.springfield-armory.com/products/xd-service-model-45-acp/
No thumb safety, because simpler is better and

I mention this because I like
Springfield Armory XD pistols.  I find
them well designed and reliable.
For instance, the serrations on the
back of the slide are back behind where
your thumb contacts the slide.  So, the
shooter doesn't get a callus on the side
of his thumb, as with some model 1911's.

"10 common mistakes in self-defense firearms training"
by Shannon Thrasher
http://www.policeone.com/the-tacticalist/articles/7391346-10-common-mistakes-in-self-defense-firearms-training/
Excerpts:
"After you get some good quality
professional instruction, go out
and get some more - from someone else."
"Just like a seat belt that must be worn
on all trips — since we can't predict a car
crash — your self-defense gun should be
carried at all times because we can't
predict when you will be attacked."

Trigger control drill.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxyTFzgWjhk
     Don't fire the shot.
Touch the trigger, take the slack out of the trigger,
smoothly increase pressure while holding the
sights on the target,
press, press, press, press, ... BANG!
Strive for the surprise break, to defeat your
autonomic nervous system, to avoid anticipating
the recoil and pushing against it.
Trap the trigger to the rear.
Get the sights back on the target.  (This is the
end of the shot process.)
Reset the trigger. (Release the trigger
just far enough to feel or hear the click.
Your trigger finger is always in contact with
the trigger.  Moving the trigger any further
than the reset wastes time.)
Take the slack out of the trigger.
(Yes, there is slack after the reset.
Slow down until you can feel it.)
Press, press, press, press, ... BANG!
Trap the trigger to the rear.
Sights back on target.
Reset.
Slack out.
Press.
...
Yes, it is a long complex process.  But,
that's the difference between a 2% probability
of hitting the target and a 100% probability.
Also, the process gets very fast with practice
(2000 repetitions).
If you don't practice trigger control,
you won't do it, and you'll miss.

"Shooting into and out of a vehicle"
by Shannon Thrasher
http://www.policeone.com/the-tacticalist/videos/7398418-Shooting-into-and-out-of-a-vehicle/
A car door is not cover.
Notice that he shot the sidewall of the tire,
which is effective.  Shooting through the tread
and steel belts of a tire is not effective. (Because
tires are designed not to deflate when punctured
by running over a nail.)
An engine block is cover for pistol bullets,
but not for .30 caliber rifle bullets.  I've
seen .30-06 bullets go through an engine block.

***** Technical *****
(very technical, math intense, for you nerds)

Bottom line up front:
Ya, I know the papers have experimental design
and modeling problems, but the point is, bullets
wobble.  So, you can't predict at what angle the bullet
will enter the target.  The terminal ballistics
are highly dependent on the angle of entry of the
bullet.  So, there is, and will always be, a large
variation in the effect of a bullet (terminal ballistic).

"Small Caliber Lethality ..." by Maj. Dean and Maj. LaFontaine.
http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a519801.pdf
Excerpt:
"Shot placement trumps all other variables"
"Yaw is not instability; it occurs naturally
in all spin-stabilized projectiles."
[The authors use the term "yaw", but they mean
precession and nutation due to a force (air resistance)
on a spinning object in free fall (not the same as
an inertial frame of reference).  Free fall would
be in a gravitational field.  Inertial frame of
reference would be in space away from any massive
objects.]

"Small-Caliber Projectile ..." by Ehlers, Guidos, and Webb.
http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a458409.pdf
[Assuming the projectile is moving forward;
Pitch is rotation about the left-right axis,
Yaw is rotation about the up-down axis, and
Roll is rotation about the forward-backward axis.]
