Concealed Carry Tips:
Things I've Learned from My CCW Journey
Part 1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_XAKRDkKW4
Decide to carry and persevere, be flexible,
experiment to find a place on your body that
allows concealed carry.
Part 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nstDmbD9P9Y
Don't touch your gun in public, purchase
quality gear from the beginning, keep gun tight
against your body.
Part 3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5Y2f5Eip9s
Bend from the knees, not the waist; conceal
with loose fitting garments; wear dark solid colors
or patterned garments.
Part 4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoGPYPQQNoQ
Wear your gun when shopping for clothes;
check belt loop location; practice before leaving
home.
Part 5
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSF6V6-T8kA
Be aware of your surroundings; be aware of the
gun laws in the state you are traveling through,
list of smart phone apps; wear accessories that
draw attention away from the place on your body
that you are carrying.
Part 6
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frOJ3aHDfqA
Tilt pistol forward, so grip doesn't stick out
the back; have at least two carry guns that operate
the same way; clean your gun weekly.
[I clean my body everyday. Why wouldn't I clean my
gun as often? Doesn't everyone wear their gun when
they shower? John Wayne did. Are you old enough

Excerpts:
1. You have to be the innocent person. You cannot have
started the fight.
2. The deadly threat has to be imminent.
3. The force you use has to be proportional to the threat.
4. In some states (16 states), you have a duty to retreat.
So, you have to take a safe avenue of escape, if it exists.
34 states, including California, have stand your ground
laws. In California you may pursue your attacker if
necessary for your safety.
5. You have to genuinely believe that the bad guy will
cause death or serious bodily harm. A reasonable person
would have to believe that what you did was reasonable.
Stand your ground laws eliminate the legal need to
retreat.
Conduct after the event is all important. Call
911 immediately! Stay at the scene, if it's safe to do
so. If not, get to a safe place, and then call 911 to
report that you have been attacked and defended yourself.
Running away is an act of the guilty. Failing to report
the incident is an act of the guilty.
95% of self defense claims at criminal trials are

This headline is misleading. It takes the
votes of 5 justices of the U.S. Supreme Court
to bring a case before the court for a hearing.
So, the U.S. Supreme Court did not reject the
challenge, they let stand the lower court's ruling.
It's hard to get 5 votes for a case, because there
are only 8 justices on the court, since Justice
Scalia's death. So, to overturn a liberal lower
court ruling, one of the liberal justices would
have to vote to hear the case. That ain't going
to happen.
This situation is different from the recent
4 to 4 vote by the Supreme Court that resulted in
upholding the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling
(that Obama's executive order not to deport illegal
aliens is unconstitutional).
In that situation, the case was heard by the
Supreme Court

DOJ says no-fly list can be used to stop gun sales
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/jun/16/doj-overrules-fbi-gun-sales-debate/
There is no publically stated criteria for being
placed on the no-fly list. There is no way to appeal
being falsely put on the no-fly list. Unless you are
Senator Ted Kennedy, once on the no-fly list you're
stuck for the rest of your life. Can you say, "Abuse

on use of no-fly list to ban gun sales
http://www.newsmax.com/Newsfront/lynch-justice-no-fly-guns/2016/06/17/id/734404/
It is always extremely difficult to find the nameless
faceless bureaucrat responsible for placing your name on
the no-fly list. But, if you are able to, the charge
should be "Abuse of power under color of law and actions
outside the scope of his job description." If you can
get the judge to agree with the "outside the scope of
his job description" part of the charge, you can prevent
his employer (usually the federal government) from paying
for his defense, including government attorneys; and you
can sue him as an individual, much easier than suing the
federal government.
There is nothing quite so satisfying as causing
a federal bureaucrat to shit in his pants.

You need to prep yourself for these violent encounters,
and do it now. Don’t ever think you’re gonna rise to

The incident occurred at night. Officer Reston

Jared Reston was shot seven times during the gun
fight, but continued to fight and won.
Keep a wound kit in your car.
Use a 9mm because you won't have to reload and
the less recoil allows for more accurate shots.
Officer Reston fired 14 rounds, he had 7 hits,
2 rounds were fatal. 50% hits. 14% fatal hits.
You've got to take a class from a reputable

You have to use your sights. Point shooting is

It wasn't stressful. Getting shot didn't hurt.
You're confident in your skills.
Does that (screwing your muzzle into his head
and firing) bother you? No, because I've done it
a thousand times in my head. [Visualization works.

Killing the people I've killed has never
bothered me. Because they made the decision to have

Fighters need to get angry to fight. Warriors never
get angry. They're just doing their job. They are
professionals. Calm detached professionalism.
There are people out there who need to be killed.

Excerpt:
Let the asshole driver pass you or have that coveted
parking spot, and don’t return the middle finger
salute. The one time I ever reached for my gun while
driving, it was because my passenger flipped off a
guy that pulled out in front of us. Stuck in traffic,
and with no apparent escape avenue for my vehicle,
when the large gentleman angrily exited his truck
and started toward my door, I preemptively reached
back to grip my holstered gun. I am convinced that
the obvious motion that telegraphed my action is
what caused him to do an abrupt about face and
return to his vehicle. I don’t share this
experience as a model of what to do, but rather
what NOT to do! It was no big deal in the end,
but I had a strong discussion with my passenger
about the realities of the fact that I carried a
gun daily.
. . .
Just as with any other activity, when carrying,
you are held to higher standard of conduct that
does not tolerate impertinent lapses of judgement.

"I'm going to win!" interviews with Jared Reston

http://ballisticradio.com/2016/04/18/tis-but-a-flesh-wound-the-attitude-of-winning-not-just-surviving-podcast-season-4-ballistic-radio-episode-158-april-17th-2016/
Excerpts:
"You gotta fight back. You gotta fight, you can’t freeze.
You need to prep yourself for these violent encounters,
and do it now. Don’t ever think you’re gonna rise to
the occasion . . .
You’re gonna fall back on your training.”
The incident occurred at night. Officer Reston
was using a .40 caliber Glock model G22.
You've got to take a class from a reputable
instructor to learn how to train. Then you can do
your training dry.
[I paraphrase below. - Jon Low]
You have to use your sights. Point shooting is
bullshit.
It wasn't stressful. Getting shot didn't hurt.
You're confident in your skills.
Does that (screwing your muzzle into his head
and firing) bother you? No, because I've done it
a thousand times in my head. [Visualization works.
- Jon Low]
Killing the people I've killed has never
bothered me. Because they made the decision to have
me kill them. [This guy will never suffer from
PTSD. - Jon Low]
The difference between fighters and warriors.
Fighters need to get angry to fight. Warriors never
get angry. They're just doing their job. They are
professionals. Calm detached professionalism.
There are people out there who need to be killed.
Concealed Carry and Driving . . .
https://civiliangunfighter.wordpress.com/2016/06/08/2898/

The OODA Loop from a Different Perspective . . .

Excerpt:
One’s ability to correctly orient to a situation is
directly related to the filters through which they
interact with the world. I am convinced that this is
why some people cannot understand the importance of
self-protection and the validity of gun ownership.
If they’ve never had their beliefs and ideals
challenged by reality or experience, then they lack
the proper mental and emotional framework to even
comprehend our arguments.

I teach (and this has changed over the years) a
three part after action procedure:
Quick Check - looking to your right and behind you,
then looking to your left and behind you. Slowly,
because with an adrenaline dump, you are much stronger
and much faster than you think you are.
Final Check - looking at the guy you just shot to
determine his condition.
Scan - with pistol pointed straight up and suport
side hand pressed against your cheek or pistol pointed
straight down in a retention SUL position (support
side hand on top of the pistol), scan in
vertical strips while rotating through 360 azimuthal
degrees.
I disagree with the author. I think a 360 degree
scan is essential for security.

Close Quarter Pistol:
Keeping Your Gun in the Fight
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZH9WctkuwLA
Notice at the two second mark, 0:02 / 3:45,
you will see Mr. Adam Painchaud, Director,
Sig Sauer Academy pull his concealment garment
up out of the way and then move his hand down
to establish a grip on the pistol.
We teach to stick your thumb under the
concealment garment and raise it just high
enough to get your hand on top of the pistol
to establish a high tight grip. Present
to close contact and fire. This results in
shooting through your concealment garment.
But, as it requires less movement, is faster.
I know a police armorer who tosses his
pistols into a 5 gallon plastic bucket of WD-40
overnight before cleaning them. You can get the
same effect with a zip lock bag and a few ounces
of WD-40. He also uses an ultra sonic cleaner.
Those things are very expensive. I've gotten
equivalent results with a dish washer. Dish
washers are great for cleaning fencing masks,
kitchen sponges, and all kinds of things you
can't put in the laundry washing machine.

Close Quarter Pistol:
Keeping Your Gun in the Fight
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZH9WctkuwLA
Notice at the two second mark, 0:02 / 3:45,
you will see Mr. Adam Painchaud, Director,
Sig Sauer Academy pull his concealment garment
up out of the way and then move his hand down
to establish a grip on the pistol.
We teach to stick your thumb under the
concealment garment and raise it just high
enough to get your hand on top of the pistol
to establish a high tight grip. Present
to close contact and fire. This results in
shooting through your concealment garment.
But, as it requires less movement, is faster.
I know a police armorer who tosses his
pistols into a 5 gallon plastic bucket of WD-40
overnight before cleaning them. You can get the
same effect with a zip lock bag and a few ounces
of WD-40. He also uses an ultra sonic cleaner.
Those things are very expensive. I've gotten
equivalent results with a dish washer. Dish
washers are great for cleaning fencing masks,
kitchen sponges, and all kinds of things you
can't put in the laundry washing machine.

Excerpts:
If the person assumes that the shaking

at a time that requires confidence.
-
Fainting after a life-or-death incident can
occur because some blood vessels constrict

From our friend, Steve Cooper, of Paladin

"Plaintiff Tab Bonidy, who has a concealed-carry
permit under Colorado law, sued the United
States Postal Service (USPS) challenging
39 C.F.R. § 232.1 (l), which prohibits the
storage and carriage of firearms on USPS
property. Bonidy claims the regulation is
unconstitutional as applied to him because it
violates his Second Amendment right to
(1) bring his gun into the United States Post
Office building in Avon, Colorado, and
(2) store the gun in the post office parking
lot while he picks up his mail."
The above is taken directly from a recent
10th Circuit Court of Appeals decision and is
a more concise setup than I could write.
Bonidy's challenge resulted in a District Court
decision that the statute cited above is
constitutional insofar as it makes illegal
the carrying of firearms for personal defense
INTO a Post Office, but is UNconstitutional
when it outlaws simply having a firearm in the
Post Office parking lot.
The feds appealed, and the 10th Circuit
decided that that part of the District Court's
decision regarding possession on USPS property
was wrong and it IS illegal to have a firearm
INSIDE YOUR CAR.
The SCOTUS decided not to hear Bonidy's

Our enemies monitor all church web sites
continuously. (This was mentioned at the
Sheepdog seminar. So, I am not citing
classified sources.) The United Methodist
Church "declared" all of their churches to be
"weapons-free". Within hours of the
declaration, the Jihadist chat rooms were
passing the word to add the Methodist churches
to their target lists.
It's as if the Methodist bishops never
read their Bibles; Luke 22:36, Nehemiah 4:17-18,
Nehemiah 4:23. Claiming that God will protect
us is superstition, not Christian theology.
The mass murderer who killed 9 persons at
the Emmanuel AME church in Charleston, SC had
initially gone to the College of Charleston to
kill people, but when he saw the armed guards
he thought that he would be shot and so instead
went to the church because he knew that the
church was a gun-free zone. Because the church
had made it common knowledge that they were a
gun-free zone, in hopes of attracting people
to their safe-zone.
You can educate the ignorant. You can
medicate the crazy. But, you can't fix stupid.
Please don't let stupid get your children killed.

Excerpt:
Those officers were not trained in
positioning at all. The report itself is
very nicely done with a lot of diagrams and
it is very informative and descriptive,
but the conclusions the report drew are
entirely false. If you look at the layout,
those officers just were not trained in how
they should have positioned themselves.
-
That is a mistake that even a lot of
police officers don’t understand. They feel
they have been trained that they have to
verbalize prior to engaging in gunfire.
In exigent circumstances, that simply is
not true. As Tom Givens says, most people’s
training comes from TV and it is all wrong.
Couple that with people who are only
marginally skilled and don’t have confidence,
what are they going to do? They are going
to try to close and that is the wrong
solution, I think, in most cases.
-
Specifically, if we don’t train people
to shoot the head, I do not think they will.
Running our mouth about it without
doing it on the range is ridiculous.
-
... will refer again to Bill Rogers.
His concept is that you have to make a
plan before you make a move. The way he
puts it, “I’ll solve it when I get there."
has killed an awful lot of people.
When you get there, you are no longer able
to solve it.
***** Techniques *****
Using your front sight as a speed gauge
(excerpt from a training letter to his students)
by Dr. Ignatius Piazza
"... how fast can you shoot and still maintain
a hand-span size group? Your speed depends on
how accurately you must shoot. Generally, more
accuracy requires more time. The good news is
you have a gauge right on the weapon which will
tell you how fast to go. It's your front sight.
If you present your weapon and see a very small
front sight against a large thoracic cavity,
you can shoot very rapidly and still guarantee
the hits. On the other hand, if you see a very
large front sight against a tiny target, such
as a target at great distance, you need to slow
down to guarantee the hits. Generally, a small
target is a function of distance, but not
always. A hostage situation at close range
would also require you to take a slow, very
accurate shot. So, even at conversational
distances you may need to shoot slowly,
depending on the size of the target. ..."
When Dr. Piazza talks about shooting
slowly, he is referring to the trigger press.
The presentation is always fast, which includes
taking the slack out of the trigger. It is
only the trigger press that slows down to
ensure the surprise break, which guarantees
the accurate hit.

"Tap, Rack, Bang" is wrong. Anyone
teaching it is not teaching best practices.
The shooting, "Bang", should always be an
intellectual decision. Never a reflex
response to something else, such as a
malfunction. I know there are a lot of
YouTube.com videos demonstrating "Tap,
Rack, Bang". They are wrong. I know there
are a lot of schools and individual
instructors teaching "Tap, Rack, Bang".
They are wrong.
The NRA teaches "Tap, Rack, Assess".
Front Sight teaches "Tap, Rack-flip, Point".
The shooting, "Bang", should not be part
of the drill, because if you practice it
thousands of times, you will not be able
to override your training in a high stress
situation. Which means you will fire,
"Bang", even when you should not. That's
why we train, so that nothing can override
our programmed reflex responses. Because,
only our programmed reflex responses are
fast enough to allow us to win.
If you don't understand this or disagree,
please contact me. We are responsible for
what we teach. We can be sued for what
we teach. It's called "professional liability".
You should be carrying insurance for
professional liability, in addition to general
liability.

Train your daughters! Because you're
not going to be there to protect her.
Four days at Front Sight is fun, but not
necessary. There are a lot of good
instructors in your area. Check with your
local gun clubs. Check the NRA Instructor's

You don't need to shoot. The lectures
for developing the proper mindset are the
important thing.

Our enemies monitor all church web sites
continuously. (This was mentioned at the
Sheepdog seminar. So, I am not citing
classified sources.) The United Methodist
Church "declared" all of their churches to be
"weapons-free". Within hours of the
declaration, the Jihadist chat rooms were
passing the word to add the Methodist churches
to their target lists.
It's as if the Methodist bishops never
read their Bibles; Luke 22:36, Nehemiah 4:17-18,
Nehemiah 4:23. Claiming that God will protect
us is superstition, not Christian theology.
The mass murderer who killed 9 persons at
the Emmanuel AME church in Charleston, SC had
initially gone to the College of Charleston to
kill people, but when he saw the armed guards
he thought that he would be shot and so instead
went to the church because he knew that the
church was a gun-free zone. Because the church
had made it common knowledge that they were a
gun-free zone, in hopes of attracting people
to their safe-zone.
You can educate the ignorant. You can
medicate the crazy. But, you can't fix stupid.
Please don't let stupid get your children killed.

As a Marine Corps military policeman,
I was taught not to approach the suspect
if you are alone. I would never attempt to
handcuff without a partner present. I would
never attempt to render first aid until the
suspect was first handcuffed. I remember an
incident that took 5 of us to handcuff a guy.
So rendering first aid by yourself is wrong.

Excerpt:
Those officers were not trained in
positioning at all. The report itself is
very nicely done with a lot of diagrams and
it is very informative and descriptive,
but the conclusions the report drew are
entirely false. If you look at the layout,
those officers just were not trained in how
they should have positioned themselves.
-
That is a mistake that even a lot of
police officers don’t understand. They feel
they have been trained that they have to
verbalize prior to engaging in gunfire.
In exigent circumstances, that simply is
not true. As Tom Givens says, most people’s
training comes from TV and it is all wrong.
Couple that with people who are only
marginally skilled and don’t have confidence,
what are they going to do? They are going
to try to close and that is the wrong
solution, I think, in most cases.
-
Specifically, if we don’t train people
to shoot the head, I do not think they will.
Running our mouth about it without
doing it on the range is ridiculous.
-
... will refer again to Bill Rogers.
His concept is that you have to make a
plan before you make a move. The way he
puts it, “I’ll solve it when I get there."
has killed an awful lot of people.
When you get there, you are no longer able
to solve it.
***** Techniques *****
Using your front sight as a speed gauge
(excerpt from a training letter to his students)
by Dr. Ignatius Piazza
"... how fast can you shoot and still maintain
a hand-span size group? Your speed depends on
how accurately you must shoot. Generally, more
accuracy requires more time. The good news is
you have a gauge right on the weapon which will
tell you how fast to go. It's your front sight.
If you present your weapon and see a very small
front sight against a large thoracic cavity,
you can shoot very rapidly and still guarantee
the hits. On the other hand, if you see a very
large front sight against a tiny target, such
as a target at great distance, you need to slow
down to guarantee the hits. Generally, a small
target is a function of distance, but not
always. A hostage situation at close range
would also require you to take a slow, very
accurate shot. So, even at conversational
distances you may need to shoot slowly,
depending on the size of the target. ..."
