Greetings Sheepdogs,

***** Mindset *****

"What separates the winners from the losers is
how a person reacts to each new twist of fate.
--Donald J. Trump.

Bob Allen (retired Nashville Police Dept.) and
Don Barnes (Nashville Police Dept.) taught a Home Defense
course at Royal Range, 14 January 2017 A.D.,
http://www.royalrangeusa.com/
One of the nuggets of wisdom I picked up was Bob saying,
"Don't point a gun at a criminal if you're not willing to
shoot, because he can see it in your eyes and he will
take your gun from you, and now he has the tool to kill you
and everyone else around you."
The other side of the coin is that if you are trained,
you can't hide the fact, and the criminal will know it.
He may not care, but sometimes it matters.
I was in Fazoli's (south Nashville at the intersection
of Harding Place and Nolensville Pike) eating dinner one
night, when a man (possibly two) came in and accosted a teenage
girl who was having dinner with her family (father, mother,
and two other younger kids).  The bad guy had his hands on
her and looked to me like he was going to drag her out.
Everyone was scared.  I stood up from my table and moved to
get a clear shot with the parking lot in the background, as
opposed to the kitchen.  As I was moving, his buddy left
out the front door.  Before I got into position, the bad
guy ran out the back door.  No one else in the restaurant
stood up from their tables.  I didn't see anyone calling 911.
I never presented my pistol.
When I was in the Marine Corps in the 80's and 90's,
I always got these assignments where I was by myself.
I noticed that I was always eating alone, operating alone.
So, being a sheepdog wasn't a culture shock for me.  But,
you may find operating alone very disturbing.  That's
reality, get used to it.

***** Tactics *****

Don't hunt home invaders in your home.  Better to find a
defensive position and wait for the cops to arrive.  (If you
have to gather kids, that's a different scenario.)
How you see yourself is very important.  So, get training.
In home invasion incidents (where you are the good guy),
leave the lights off and keep your flashlight with you.  (One
of the reasons is that you don't want to get backlit.)
Quick peek can be effective, but it gives away your position.
So, don't come around the corner that you just quick peeked around.
You'll get shot.  Approach from some other direction.
If you want the details and reasons why, take the course.
Home Defense given by Bob Allen and Don Barnes at Royal Range.
http://www.royalrangeusa.com/
They also explain how to enter a room, button hook, cross,
etc.  I recommend the course.  The Simunitions part of the course
drives home reality, as opposed to Rambo fantasies you may have
about yourself.

Dave Spaulding says that the idea of moving while presenting your
pistol only makes sense under the assumption that the enemy is applying
aimed fire at you.  But, in reality, criminals don't aim, but rather
they shoot randomly in your direction.  So, by moving you don't decrease
your probability of getting hit.  You do, however decrease your
probability of hitting, because your shooting platform is moving.
So, it's better if you stand still, when you present and shoot,
to ensure a good hit.
     I find this argument convincing.

***** Techniques *****

Practice steady shooting platform while moving by
walking around with a cup of water filled to the brim.
Bent knees and small steps.  Thanks to Bob Allen of
Royal Range.

***** Gear *****

I installed a MOSSBERG 500 KICKLITE TACTICAL BUTTSTOCK
http://www.brownells.com/shotgun-parts/stock-forend-parts/buttstocks/mossberg-500-kicklite-tactical-buttstocks-prod72143.aspx
on a friend's Mossberg 500 12 gauge shotgun.  It is
adjustable for length, has a spring shock absorber to
dampen recoil, and a thick soft butt plate.
So, the recoil is mitigated, making
the shotgun much more pleasant to shoot.
It is solidly attached to the receiver by a single
bolt requiring a hex wrench (Allen wrench).
No jiggling, very solid.
I recommend this product.

***** Legal and Political stuff *****

The Fort Lauderdale Airport in Florida was and is a gun-free zone.
That's why the murderer chose to attack there.
All mass murders occur in gun-free zones.  Because no one
is there to stop them.  If a good guy with a gun shoots
the bad guy, it never develops into a mass murder.  If the
bad guy had attempted the mass murder in Alaska (where he came
from), someone would have shot him immediately.  Things are
a little different in Alaska.
