Why Conceal Carry a Firearm?

     You can't predict random events.
This is deep.  Random events cluster
(in time and space).  Because, clustered
events have a higher entropy than uniformly
distributed events.  Third law of thermodynamics
says that the universe and all non-reversible
systems move toward states of higher entropy.
(Galaxies cluster.  They are not uniformly
distributed in space.  When you flip a fair
coin, you don't get alternating heads and
tails.  You get clusters of heads and clusters
of tails.)
The probability of you guessing when and
where a lethal force encounter will occur is
less than the expected value you would
calculate using any a priori probability
density function.
The cost of losing this bet is
so extreme that the weighted probability
density function is not smooth and
continuous.  Rather, we are dealing with
delta Dirac functions.  Which puts this
analysis outside of normal game theory
analysis. (If you fix a finite dollar value
to human life, then you are back in the
realm of game theory and actuarial analysis.)

Mark Twain said that fiction is harder
to write than non-fiction, because fiction
has to make sense.  So, if this doesn't make
sense, you know why.

This is why it is so critically important
to watch what you're doing as you carefully,
gently holster.
     I know some schools and
Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers
(FLETC) teach keeping your head up and looking
around when holstering.  But, why would you
be holstering if there is still something to
be looking for?  If you're holstering, it
means the situation is copacetic.
     Statistically speaking, holstering is
the most dangerous part of any training
regime.  Holstering is when students shoot
themselves in the foot and leg.

Chicago cop accidentally shoots himself at courthouse.
http://www.policeone.com/accidental-discharge/articles/8307416-Chicago-cop-accidentally-shoots-himself-at-courthouse/?utm_source=8310075&utm_medium=email&utm_content=TopNewsRight5Title&utm_campaign=P1Member&nlid=8310075
The gun did not discharge.  The officer fired
the gun.  Guns cannot discharge by themselves.
The officer was not taking the gun from a locker
when he negligently fired the gun.  If that were
so, the bullet would have gone into the locker.
The negligent discharge was while the gun was
pointed at the officer's upper leg.  That's the
only way the bullet would hit his upper leg.
Watch what you're doing when you holster.
Lots of things can get caught between your pistol
and your holster:  your shirt, a draw string from
your windbreaker, etc.  If you forcefully ram
your pistol into your holster, you're begging
for a negligent discharge.

***** Politics *****

***** Miscellany *****

My aunt Lois told me, if you don't have anything nice
to say, don't say anything.  Well, I've got to say some
thing, so I just won't mention names.
The effective range of a rifle projectile is the
range over which it is supersonic.  Because as long
as it is supersonic, it is out running its shock wave.
When it slows to sonic speed, it is in its own shock
wave and subject to turbulence.  This turbulence
causes it to yaw and pitch (tumble). (It's already rolling
due to the rifling in the barrel, so we'll ignore
that perturbation.)
This is not the range at which the bullet is
lethal.  That is a much longer range, because the
bullet only needs to be traveling at 400 feet per
second to penetrate a human body.
Sonic speed is about 1200 feet per second at
sea level under standard temperature (25 decrees C)
and pressure (1 atmosphere).  [So, smallbore match
ammo has a muzzle speed of ~1100 fps.]
Many pistol rounds are subsonic, as the military
standard 230 grain copper jacketed round nose bullet
in the .45 ACP round, 850 feet per second.  Subsonic
pistol bullets lose energy relatively slowly compared to
supersonic rifle bullets, because air resistance goes
as the cube of speed, approximately, in the range
of speeds we are dealing with.  They are stable until
they stop, because they never go through the sonic
transition from supersonic to subsonic.
What's the point, Staff?  There are cartridge
manufacturers who are selling very light (50 grain
bullet) pistol ammunition with an advertised muzzle
speed of 2000 fps.  (The bullet has to be very light,
otherwise the recoil at that speed would be
intolerable.)  Hollow point bullets have very
low ballistic coefficients and are not aerodynamically
stable.  So, they lose speed very quickly.
Which means these 50 grain bullets are going to go
through the sonic transition from supersonic to
subsonic within self-defense distances,
0 to 25 yards.  You can determine the exactly range
with your ballistic calculator.
You can't get accurate shots with a tumbling bullet.
This past Saturday, 2/7/15, I took a class at my gun
club, Strategic Edge in Chapel Hill, TN, and we
saw many examples of bullets that hit the target
sideways, because they went through the sonic transition.
Yes, there are stupid products on the market.
Buyer beware!

Cheers,
Jon

Excerpt (paraphrased):
1.  Paperwork should be done in a secured
location where others cannot approach your car.
(This includes balancing your check book,
putting on make up, etc.)
2.  You should always know an escape plan.
Park for a rapid exit (back into parking
spaces) and leave a cushion with cars
around you on the road (Leave enough space
in front of you to allow you to turn and
drive out.).
3.  Check mirrors often and observe those
around you.
4.  Make sure you aren’t being followed.
A few left turns will help you identify
potential danger.
5.  Try to avoid using the same routes daily.
This vigilance should continue while driving home.
6.  Scan parking lots and intersections
as you enter them.
7.  Make eye contact with others when you can.
Pay particular attention to those that avoid
looking at you.
8.  Be cautious when cars stop suddenly in front
of you or when they fail to pull completely off
the road when they stop.
9.  When suspects exit their vehicle, if they
leave their door open that could be an indication
they plan on attacking and running back to their car.
10.  Never let someone approach you while
you are sitting in your car.  Drive away.
     During Operation Iraqi Freedom, the
brief for incoming troops ordered us not
to stop to render aid to anyone on the
side of the road.  Even if you saw them
bleeding and suffering, it is an ambush.
And it was.  While things are different
in the continental United States.  You
still have to consider the safety of your
family in your car if it happens to be
an ambush.  Always safer for you and your
family to call 911 and let the pros
handle the situation.  This is not the
parable of the Good Samaritan.  This is
the reality of the Obama administration
releasing 30,000 convicted violent criminals,
who are illegal aliens, into our society
every year; and failing to secure our
southern border.  In 2008, I witnessed
(as much as an intel analyst can
witness anything) battalion sized armed
units crossing our southern border
into Arizona.

What's the point Staff?  Prolate objects spinning
about their axis of symmetry are not stable.  That's
why in archery, arrows are fin stabilized.  [ The
purpose of canting the fletching on arrow shafts
is to maximize air friction upon release before
the arrow starts spinning and is flexing due to
archer's paradox (is in an unstable state), and
minimize friction when the arrow starts spinning
(has a stable flight path).  Which makes sense
when using fingers to release the arrow.  Mechanical
releases that don't induce archer's paradox should
fletch without cant (without spin).]
That is why tungsten armor penetrators are fin stabilized.
Spin stabilized bullets (or American footballs) are
not stable.  They would much prefer to rotate about
an axis perpendicular to their symmetry axis.
That is their stable rotational axis.

"Failure is an indication that someone
tried to do something." -- Ingersoll

***** Training *****

Yesterday (1/11/15) I shot a match at the
Volunteer Pistol Club in Alexandria, TN.  I
missed a target completely.  I replayed the
scenario in my mind to figure out why I had
missed.  I had seen the target, clearly.
On every other target, I had seen the target
only as a blurry background to my front sight.
The front sight had been clear.  So, I missed
because I did not have a proper sight picture
(I was not focused on the front sight).
Why had I not gotten a correct sight picture
on that target?  How could I have seen the
target clearly?  I must have been looking
through the top lens of my bifocal glasses.
On all the other targets, I had tilted my
head back to look through the bottom lens
of my bifocal.  Head tilted back is an
awkward, unnatural position.  Should I
change my glasses, or train to get the
correct head position consistently, or
look for some other solution?  A bright
fiber optic front sight?  Wear my contact
lenses with shooting glasses that allow
me to focus on my front sight?  Wear a
different contact lens in my aiming eye
to allow me to focus on my front sight?
(That would interfere when I shoot left
handed, aiming with my left eye, around
the left side of a barrier.)
This is why we train.  Some solutions
don't work under stress.  We need to find them
and discard them before we train them into
engrained habits and reflex responses.

Why a retention holster is a good idea
for civilian concealed carry,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlJUc8iBcEA
by Massad Ayoob.
I have always taught my students to use
a holster without any retention device,
because high stress causes us to forget to
do things, such as defeat the retention device.
Much of what I put in my emails from
other instructors conflicts with what I teach.
Diversity of opinion is an indication of
independent thought.

     The Smith&Wesson M&P Shield has a
semi-single stack magazine.  Its thickness is
between a single and double stack magazine.
The only way to find a pistol that fits
your hand and has an acceptable trigger
is to go to a gun store (or your friend's
house who owns every possible gun, we all know
such a person, whether we know it or not)
and try them out.  Chamber check,
magazine check.  Grip.  Dry fire.  Hold the
trigger to the rear, rack the slide, reset,
and dry fire.

The IDPA changed their rules to create a
Compact Carry Pistol (CCP) division, because
they found that classifier times were
7% to 24% slower than Stock Service Pistol
(SSP) division for the same person on the
same day.  Smaller pistols are more difficult
to shoot.  A short barrel means a short sighting
radius.  Which means larger sighting error.
Short grip means you can't get all your
fingers on the grip, so you don't have
a stable grip.  I hope this influences your
choice of carry pistol.
